For online gamers, an ideal gaming experience is where they only need to play the game and win without being concerned about other real-world factors.

In this ideal experience, you only need to consider placing first in a race, exploring the next dungeon, winning a bet on a live football game, or collecting materials for a new weapon.

However, when playing games online, there are other things you need to be concerned about outside the game. One of these things is keeping your online gaming accounts secure.

A secure account is essential to protect your online information and transactions. You understand the importance of security whenever you fund your account with real money for in-game purchases or online sports betting.

Here is how to keep yourself safe by protecting your personal information and online gaming account.

Ways to Secure Your Online Gaming Account

Secure Your Passwords

Many online accounts are hacked and compromised because they use simple passwords that are easy to remember or guess, making it convenient for other people to hack.

In NordPass’ 2020 list of the top 200 most common passwords, more than 2.5 million users use “123456” as their password. Additionally, most of the passwords in their list only need less than a second to be cracked by a hacker.

One way to prevent being anxious from being hacked, you should use strong passwords to protect your account. One way you can make your password stronger is to use a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters.

Another method is to make long passwords. While six characters are usually the minimum, longer passwords provide additional security.

More importantly, avoid using personal information in your passwords. Do not use numbers like your Social Security number, address, phone number, or date of birth.

Use an antivirus or antimalware solution

Hackers may use malware or viruses to hijack your computer or device to steal your passwords and access your account. Hackers can accomplish this attack through various means like phishing or USB drive downloads.

Phishing is when the hacker pretends to be an authoritative figure or a person close to you. They attempt to gain your trust to make you give them your info, such as your gaming account credentials.

To prevent this situation, use antivirus or anti-malware software. This software acts as your front-line defense against malware and cyberattacks to keep your online account from being compromised.

Avoid using public Wi-Fi for transactions

Public Wi-Fi is a suitable way to access and play online games outside the house, such as in a park, fast food, or coffee shop.

However, you are also sharing in the same network as other strangers. Some of them may capture the signal from your device and compromise your account credentials.

While public Wi-Fi is not necessarily bad per se, there are risks to your account, mainly if you will perform secure transactions.

Some of these transactions include funding your gaming account for in-game purchases or online sports bets.

You can use public Wi-Fi for regular gaming activities. However, consider using a private internet connection for secure transactions.

Online gaming should be a fun experience, especially if you do not want to worry about anything else except playing the game and winning in-game objectives.

However, that ideal scenario can happen if you exercise the appropriate security measures to secure your account.

Use stronger passwords, anti-malware software, and a secure network to give your gaming account sufficient security. This way, you can play your online games with less worry.

Seek advice from an IT expert to know more about other security solutions to secure your online gaming account and devices.
