The ability to summon spirits to help in battle is one of the biggest changes to Elden Ring’s combat system, which makes getting the Spirit Calling Bell a top priority.
Collecting Spirit Ashes gives players a critical tool for dealing with the various enemies of the Lands Between. The thing is that it’s not Spirit Ashes that summon units, it’s actually the Spirit Calling Bell.Â
Players can start receiving ashes before receiving the bell, including a keepsake item at the very start of the game. The trouble is that those won’t be usable until after receiving the bell.
So how do you get the Spirit Calling Bell in Elden Ring? Here is what’s known about getting the item and how to get it as quickly as possible.
In Elden Ring, the player receives the Spirit Calling Bell from the witch Renna at the Church of Elleh.
After a certain point in the game, the player will meet Melina and gain the ability to summon the steed Torrent. After this point, Renna will appear and wait for the player to arrive in the Church of Elleh. Once the player arrives in the Church of Elleh, she can be found sitting in one of the broken walls near the Site of Grace.
Once the player talks with her, she will give them a Spirit Calling Bell and the Spirit Ash for the Lone Wolves. This is a very useful ash for the early game, summoning in three wolf spirits. Though they don’t pack much of a punch for anyone outside the starting area, they are very good at drawing aggro and bashing enemies out of attacks.
For other early-game options, players can pick up the Fanged Imp Ashes as a keepsake item at the start of the game. Players can obtain another by exhausting dialog with Roderika when they first meet her in the overworld. It’s best to grow comfortable with just one or two sets of Spirit Ashes, however. They do need to be upgraded over the course of the game in the same way as a weapon.
Renna may not appear for players under certain conditions.
At present, these conditions are uncertain. It is unclear if there are actually actions the player can take that will trigger Renna disappearing or if this is a bug. All FromSoftware games have vague or uncertain ways to end an NPC’s questline prematurely, but it’s also possible that this is a bug.
Either way, it’s not too much of a worry. If Renna doesn’t appear, the player can purchase the Spirit Calling Bell at Roundtable Hold from the Twin Maiden Husks. Though this will cost some runes, it’s a fairly small price to play given how important these items are.
