Legendary Pokémon that flee from battle are back, so how do you catch Mesprit in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?

At a quick glance, the only possible way to reliably catch Mesprit would be to either hit it with a Master Ball on turn one, or to get lucky with a Quick Ball. But that’s not actually the case. There is one key trick to catching Mesprit. It does require some preparation, but once players do it, they’ll be able to capture the Lake Guardian with very little trouble. Here’s how to catch Mesprit in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

How to find Mesprit’s location in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

After talking with Professor Rowan in the cave on Lake Verity, players can find Mespirit’s location in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl by using the Marking App in the Pokétch.

The Marking App can be obtained from the Pokétch Company in Jubilife City, which is located directly to the left of the TV station. The businessman on the right side of the building gives players new apps based on how many gym badges they have, with the Marking App being given after winning five gym badges.

The Marking App is used to catch Mesprit in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

After speaking with Professor Rowan in the Lake Verity cave, Mesprit will begin to roam across the Sinnoh region. Its location can be tracked using the Marking App, which shows where to find Mesprit.

Mesprit changes locations every time players move between different spots on the map, for example exiting a city and stepping onto a route or vice versa. The best way to catch Mesprit is to simply move back and forth between two locations with tall grass that are adjacent to one another until the player and Mesprit’s locations happen to align. This can be done by running back and forth to the Valley Windworks and Route 205, Route 216 and 217, or Route 210 and 215.

Mesprit is one of many different legendaries and mythicals that can be found in Pokemon BDSP, and is definitely worth catching. That said, it does fall short compared to some of the other options available in the game.

How to catch Mesprit in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Mesprit can be caught relatively easily by using the move Mean Look.

The trick to catching legendary Pokémon that flee from encounters is to utilize an attack or ability that prevents the opponent from fleeing. The trouble is that many of these moves have been removed over the years, and several of them first require dealing significant damage to the Pokémon, which may end up defeating it. Also worth noting is that status effects do not stop the enemy from fleeing, as a sleeping or paralyzed Mesprit is still completely capable of fleeing from battle.

Making matters even trickier is the fact that Mesprit has the Levitate ability, which prevents Arena Trap from taking effect. This makes Mean Look the safest and most effective way of dealing with Mesprit fleeing.

A long list of Pokémon learn the move Mean Look by leveling up including Zubat, Jynx, and Duskull. The best option for dealing with Mesprit is Murkrow or Honchkrow. Murkrow learns Mean Look at level 41 and its dark-flying typing allows it to take on Mesprit without much danger.

Jynx is another strong option as it resists all of Mesprit’s damaging attacks, has a high Sp. Defense stat, and knows the move Lovely Kiss which can put Mesprit to sleep and greatly increase the chance of catching Mesprit.

After using Mean Look, players can catch Mesprit the same way they catch any other Pokémon. Whittle down its health, apply a status effect, and hit it with Ultra Balls, Timer Balls, or Dusk Balls depending on the situation.

How to catch Uxie and Azelf in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Uxie and Azelf can be captured in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl after catching Palkia or Dialga by visiting them in their lake caves.

While Mesprit forces players to run around the entire Sinnoh region chasing it, Uxie and Azelf are normal legendary encounters for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl players. All they need to do is advance to a certain point in the game, Surf to their caves on the Valor Lakefront and Acuity Lakefront, and talk to the Pokémon. From there, the Pokémon are battled normally and can be caught by beating them up and hitting them with Poké Balls.
