The GTA 6 release date is years away, but details related to the game’s story, map, and setting are already floating around.

GTA 5 is still popular, thanks to the open-world game mode Grand Theft Auto Online that allow players to create a fictional reality. Nine years and many ports since the last title’s release, Rockstar is finally diving back into the Grand Theft Auto franchise. GTA 6 is sure to be a smash hit, whenever it may come out.

So far, Rockstar has been tight-lipped about the details, but there’s plenty to glean about the game’s location from reports and leaks. Here is what’s known about the game so far, and what might be officially revealed in the future.

Where is GTA 6 located?

GTA 6 will reportedly take place in a fictional city based on Miami.

A July Bloomberg report revealed Bonnie and Clyde-inspired characters as GTA 6 protagonists, besides many other details. Included in that was that GTA 6 will have a setting based on Miami.

Plenty of leakers suggested that GTA 6 take place in modern-day Vice City, showing how the city has developed since Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The 2002 game featured fewer interior spots and more open areas, including a beach at the center of most missions. GTA: Vice City remains one of the most popular titles in the series, despite Liberty City being the most prominent locale in series history.

It seems the developer agrees and may bring the old city back in a modern style. However, the report doesn’t specifically state that it will be Vice City. It’s possible Rockstar may introduce another fictional city based on Miami.

Why is GTA 6 taking so long?

GTA 6 has been in development for a long while for a number of reasons. This includes changes within the Rockstar studio, the success of Grand Theft Auto Online, and the simple fact that developing a huge game takes a long time.

Grand Theft Auto games are uniformly huge in scale. Grand Theft Auto 5 first released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and gaming hardware has come a long way since then. The GTA 6 map will likely be much larger and more detailed, which has reportedly impacted the release timeline.

The GTA 6 location will be vast, developed, and will feature more indoor locations. According to a leaker Matheusvictorbr, the GTA 6 map will be as big as Red Dead Redemption II, which was enormous but much less dense.

Alongside that, the game will continue to have regular map updates. Rockstar is reportedly considering new missions and cities to add to the game over time, using a development structure that the company hopes will reduce the need for a development crunch. This would see the GTA 6 map expand and its content offering grow, with the goal of retaining players for years in the same way GTA 5 has.
