Fortnite has confirmed that proximity chat is coming to Creative mode on August 6.

Proximity chat enables players to communicate with each other more realistically by hearing nearby voices. While it has the potential to be chaotic, Proximity chat can be a fun feature in battle royale games where players can communicate, team up, and achieve objectives. If it’s disruptive, players can always turn it off.

For now, Proximity chat is only available for creators in Fortnite Creative and UEFN. Starting August 6, players can control how they communicate in the lobbies.

“Squads can more easily communicate and strategize in co-operative shooters, players can form alliances or agree to go their separate ways in RPGs, teams can collaboratively solve challenges in escape rooms and puzzle games, and so much more,” Fortnite said.

How to turn on Proximity chat in Fortnite?

Fortnite

Fortnite Proximity chat can be turned on from “Island Settings” under “Voice Chat.”

Since it’s only available in Creative mode, players can enable it by going to the Island Settings and turning it on from the Mode tab. You may tweak the proximity distance from settings if you don’t want to hear players from a mile away. You may also reduce the full volume distance from the soundbar.

Those with Proximity chat enabled will have a HUD displayed when someone nearby starts speaking. With the new feature enabled, players can still mute, block, and take regular voice chat actions.

All of this is still in early access, which means while all players in Creative mode will be able to use it, Proximity chat may not be perfect in its current state. Fortnite may roll out fixes based on player feedback.

Is there a Proximity chat in Fortnite Battle Royale?

Proximity chat is not available in regular battle royale mode, but creators can use it in UEFN.

It’s unknown whether this public test phase means Proximity will ever make it to the battle royale mode, but it seems unlikely. However, players are hopeful Epic may eventually roll out the unique feature for all Fortnite modes.
