Fnatic end spring split emphatically with wins over G2, Splyce
Fnatic end spring split emphatically with wins over G2, Splyce
Fnatic finished the LEC spring split with two convincing wins against G2 Esports and Splyce.
After a rough start to the new year, Fnatic is ending the regular season as one of the front-runners for the spring title. On Saturday, Fnatic took down G2 after an action-packed match that had fans on the edges of their seats.
Fnatic played an aggressive early game with multiple dives in different lanes across the map and with vision control effectively established across either jungle. Conversely, G2 struggled to find picks and maintain relevance in the early and mid game periods.
At 21 minutes, Fnatic secured a baron but was unable to end the game with it. The team’s hesitation, combined with a lack of a true tank champion to stand at the frontline, kept Fnatic from pushing effectively. This stalemate allowed G2 to complete enough items to catch up.
Martin “Wunder” Hansen on Ryze was the MVP for G2. The top laner was ready both to defend his team’s base and to aggressively split push when it was opportune. More than anyone else, Wunder kept G2 in the game despite the team having fallen behind.
At 41 minutes, Fnatic secured the fifth baron buff of the game and unsuccessfully attempted to end. The game would continue long enough for yet another baron to spawn, but it was an ensuing base race that ultimately decided the game in dramatic fashion for Fnatic.
With two victories in week nine, Fnatic finished the regular season with eleven wins, enough to secure the overall third place. The team’s roaring finish to the split sees it positioned as among the biggest threats to regional favorite G2 in the playoffs.
In round one of the Spring Playoffs, Fnatic will face Team Vitality. G2 is qualified as the first seed and will wait until round two, where they are set to face Origen.
