Final Fantasy 14 Mobile revealed: Here’s what we know
At long last, Final Fantasy 14 Mobile has been officially confirmed by Square Enix alongside some key details about the game.
Final Fantasy 14 has a unique success story in gaming. At one point, it was seemingly doomed to go down as one of the biggest flops in history. Flash forward several years and a major relaunch and it’s a cash cow for Square Enix, with a massive player base and steady churn of expansions.
The company isn’t content with its current level of success, though. Several months removed from its long-awaited launch on Xbox consoles, the company announced a mobile release for the game.
Square Enix partners with PUBG Mobile developer to make Final Fantasy 14 Mobile
Final Fantasy 14 Mobile is being developed by Square Enix and LightSpeed Studios.
Naoki Yoshida announced the news across the game’s social media channels, which was packaged with a teaser trailer. This included glimpses of the gameplay, combat, and some familiar story beats for endemic players.
The teaser trailer also confirmed that Square Enix isn’t tackling this project alone. The publisher is partnered with LightSpeed Studios. LightSpeed Studios has created or co-developed a slew of prominent mobile games, most notably PUBG Mobile.
It’s unclear which branch of LightSpeed Studios will take on this project but the announcement comes just days after announcing Hideaki Itsuno as the new head of LightSpeed Japan Studio. Itsuno is a famed game director known for his 30-year run with Capcom. During that time he served as director for a host of major releases ranging from famed arena fighter Power Stone 2 to Devil May Cry 5. He left the company on a high note, last working on Dragon’s Dogma 2.
Details on Final Fantasy 14 Mobile release date, crossplay still unclear
No details regarding Final Fantasy 14 Mobile’s release date, crossplay, or cross-progress potential were announced in the teaser trailer.
The wording from Yoshida, however, suggests that it may effectively be a new game.
“LightSpeed Studios is working with tremendous enthusiasm and dedication to faithfully recreate the story, duties, battle content, and other aspects of the original game,” Yoshida said in the announcement.
Alongside this, the game’s official website confirms that the game will have just nine jobs available at launch. This means that more than half of the jobs available in the PC and console version of Final Fantasy 14 will be available at launch.
Though it’s not made explicit, it certainly seems like both Square Enix and players are going to be starting fresh with Final Fantasy 14 Mobile.
