With The Last of Us coming to TV and winning over fans new and old, fans are wondering if a new Last of Us video game is in the works. Here’s everything we know about a possible sequel to the games with The Last of Us 3.
The Last of Us was released in 2013 to rave reviews, and the sequel, The Last of Us Part 2, followed up on the acclaimed story. Now that the original game is being adapted into the first season of HBO’s The Last of Us, fans have begun to wonder about possible further installments in the series.
Here’s everything we know about The Last of Us 3.
The Last of Us Part 3 hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but things are looking better and better for a possible sequel to the beloved series.
When speaking with THR, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Duckmann seemed open to the possibility of a third installment, saying that “I think there’s more story to tell.” Druckmann and Naughty Dog have offered no official comment, but Druckmann has said before that he did have the basic building blocks for a third game.
Speaking with IGN, Druckmann has said that he and co-writer Halley Gross have already written “an outline for a story, that we’re not making — but I hope one day can see the light of day — that explores a little bit what happens after [The Last of Us 2].”
There is no confirmed release date for The Last of Us 3 given that development has not been announced, nor is it likely to have officially begun.
With the radical success of HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us on TV, it’s hard to imagine that the next step in the games isn’t on Naughty Dog’s mind. With the outline already written, Druckmann and the rest of the creative team at Naughty Dog are sitting on a story with very high expectations behind it.
If development does begin, it’s likely to take several years to put together.
From what little Druckmann has spoken about the possible third installment, it sounds like it would follow up not too long after the events of The Last of Us 2. At the end of the second game, protagonist Ellie Williams decides not to kill the target of her quest for revenge, Abby Anderson. Ellie goes on a brutal quest for revenge after Abby kills Ellie’s father figure and previous protagonist, Joel Miller.
The events of the third game would likely pick up with Ellie’s life in the wake of this decision. Ellie, as the only known person immune to the mutated Cordyceps virus, still presents the possibility of being the catalyst for a major shift in the world of the games. Whether the third game would be an exploration of what comes after a self-destructive quest for revenge, or steps forwards for the post-outbreak humanity of the games, remains yet to be seen.
Nothing can be certain until the third game gets officially confirmed and released.
