The Behind the Sims Summit stream on October 18 had simulation fans at the edge of their seats, anxiously awaiting any official news on The Sims 5. The news finally came at the end of the Summit but it left people with more questions than ever before.
A Sims 4 sequel has been announced by EA, but there hadn’t been any confirmed information until the stream last night. Just as Sims players were giving up hope, the host mentioned that something called Project Rene was coming. This working title is meant to represent words like “renewal,” “renaissance,” and “rebirth.”
“It represents the developer’s renewed commitment for The Sims’ bright future,” EA said in a press release.
So far, EA has not confirmed that Project Rene is The Sims 5, but it’s safe to call it the sequel to The Sims 4. Maxis will continue to work on this next entry in the Sims franchise, which is still in the very early stages.
During the summit, fans of the Sims were given a sneak peek at Project Rene’s improvements on customization. All of the furniture, accessories, and other decor could have their pattern, color, and even shape changed. This gives simulation fans a lot more freedom in how their homes are decorated, along with the ability to place things a lot more specifically than The Sims 4’s static grid.

Not much else is known about the gameplay or how it will improve on The Sims 4’s semi-broken gameplay model. But it has been said that it will be cross-platform with cross-progression and possibly even free-to-play, like The Sims 4.
No release date was given for Project Rene but it was stated that it will still be a few years until it’s ready. That left many Sims fans disappointed, although nobody is too surprised. With The Sims 4 coming out in 2014, it’s been quite a long time anyway. Might as well wait another few years.
