eSports is Rapidly Growing in the United States and Here Are the Numbers

Once considered a niche hobby, gaming has evolved into a powerhouse of mainstream entertainment, attracting millions of fans, major corporate sponsors, and huge prize pools. Today, eSports rivals traditional sports in viewership and continues to gain ground with a generation that’s increasingly turning from television to digital platforms like Twitch and YouTube Gaming. With rapid growth and limitless potential, eSports has firmly cemented itself in American culture, bringing in a new era of sports to millions of people.

A growth in spectatorship and investment in America

eSports is rivaling traditional sports in the United States when it comes to viewership. Although it has yet to reach the heights of football and postseason baseball, it has continued to attract millions of fans from all over the world. For instance, Statista reports that the League of Legends (LoL) 2023 World Championship earned 6.4 million peak viewers and became the most-watched eSports event of all time. That’s more than the average number of viewers who tune in to watch regular season NBA and MLB games for the 2023 season. 

The US leads other countries in terms of revenue generation by the end of 2024, having a projected $871 million. That’s more than double the amount second-placed China will make ($445.18 million). 

Research also shows that as of 2023, the U.S. eSports audience alone has grown to around 30 million total spectatorships. Projections suggest that this number will continue to grow and could reach 72 million by the end of 2029  as more young Americans flood these virtual spaces. A survey found that interest in eSports is the highest among young adults aged 18 to 34, with more than 20% claiming to be serious fans.

But it’s not just young people who are watching. Mainstream athletes and celebrities are also taking part in eSports events and investing in it heavily. For example, the Valorant Champions tournament was attended by popular figures like SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and actor Ben Affleck in 2023. NBA legend Michael Jordan also reportedly led a group of investors to fork out $26 million into gaming company aXiomatic Gaming, and he is just one of a growing number of celebrities to invest in competitive gaming.

This trend has obviously had an impact on the eSports market valuation. According to Yahoo! Finance, North America accounts for nearly 40% of the global eSports market, and a majority of this comes from the United States. The impressive figures come from a combination of media rights, sponsorships, and live events, which draw thousands of fans in person and millions more online. From major corporations to local startups, sponsors are pouring in. Popular sports brands like Nike, Red Bull, and even fashion juggernauts like Louis Vuitton have joined forces with popular eSports teams as they hope to reach one of the most coveted demographics in modern day marketing: young, tech-savvy viewers who have proven to be notoriously difficult to engage through traditional media. It’s safe to say that eSports has become a cultural movement and brands want a piece of the action.

Universities and colleges are adopting eSports

Aside from the big names and corporations, colleges and universities across the U.S. have also welcomed eSports with open arms. As of this writing, over 200 American colleges now offer varsity eSports programs, with some even providing scholarships for talented players. The University of California, Irvine, led the way by building a dedicated eSports arena and offering scholarships. As UCI’s eSports program director, Mark Deppe said, “eSports is about more than just gaming. It’s about teamwork, problem-solving, and preparing students for a fast-growing industry.” For many schools, eSports has transcended beyond gaming to a new, viable path for students, similar to traditional sports.

Furthermore, the professionalization of eSports is giving it more legitimacy. Gone are the days when gaming was considered a “waste of time.” Today, gamers sign contracts, have dedicated coaches, and train rigorously, just like professional athletes. Star players like Fortnite legend Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and League of Legends Hall of Famer Faker have become household names with millions of fans and big endorsement deals. 

Another driving force behind eSports growth takes a page from traditional sports books. US-based eSports leagues like the Overwatch League and Call of Duty League now represent specific cities, a community-like approach that has helped to create local pride and rivalries, much like in professional sports leagues like the NFL and NBA. Cities like Dallas are even investing in dedicated eSports arenas. In fact, Dallas now hosts one of the largest eSports venues in North America. As eSports spectatorship continues to surge across the country, fans can expect more cities to join the party in the years to come.

The eSports betting industry

Of course, the growing popularity of the eSports industry means new opportunities for businesses, and one of the fastest-growing areas is eSports betting. With legalized sports betting now available in many states, betting on eSports is quickly gaining ground. 

Fans who are generally comfortable with online platforms may find betting a natural part of their eSports experience. Reputable platforms have also made eSports betting more seamless by providing comprehensive guides and reviews for bettors. Indeed, the future of eSports in the United States looks bright. For a generation raised on gaming and digital media, eSports feels as authentic as any traditional sport. Fans, brands, and even some parents see eSports as a real career path, not just a pastime.

As we look forward, the U.S. is set to remain a leader in this space. From packed live events and college programs to VR innovations and a growing betting market, the American eSports industry is evolving to meet its fans’ expectations. Without a doubt, eSports is set to thrive in the United States.
