EA announces $3 million Apex Legends Global Series for 2020
EA Games just announced the Apex Legends Global Series, and with $3 million in prize money on the line, this is a big leap forward for Apex Legends in the esports scene.
The Global Series will feature 12 online events open to teams from 60 countries around the world. Teams will compete for a chance to earn points towards a qualifying spot in live events like Challenger Events, which will focus on regional competitions. Winners will get a reserved spot in a Major. Competitors can also earn advanced platement invitations to Majors and points by placing well at Premier Events.
This means there are three different routes towards earning a spot at a Major, as outlined below.
The Championship, which will be the Global Series’ biggest event of the year, will feature top teams from the third and final major, as well as from certain Premier events, the Global Series leadership board, and last chance online tournaments.
Teams can register for the Apex Legends Global Series now by filling out applications here. The first Online Tournament takes place on January 25, 2020, with registration beginning January 11. This tournament offers a chance for teams to qualify for the first Major.
The following Online Tournament will take place on February 29. Participants will have the opportunity to qualify for the first Premier Event.
More information on future events will be available here in the near future.
Apex Legends Global Series Majors information
“We have a passionate community all over the world, so we’re taking this show on the road,” reads the official press release.
The first Major will take place on March 13 through the 15th at the Esports Stadium in Arlington, Texas. There will be a $500,000 prize pool. There will be three other Majors during the season, with yet to be revealed locations. The fourth Major is the Apex Legends Global Series Championship, where 60 teams will be invited to compete for a $1 million prize pool.
According to the press release, each Major will culminate with a Finals incorporating the “innovative Apex Legends Match Point system.” This was first utilized at the Apex Legends Preseason Invitational earlier this year, giving fans a taste of what was to come in 2020. The Match Point system has teams competing to reach a predetermined Points threshold, activating the Match Point. Teams can only win the match if they get a victory while Match Point is activated.
“Majors are our flagship EA live events. This is where the best teams around the world compete for the largest prize pools throughout the year. The winners of the Apex Legends Majors have the right to call themselves the best players in the world,” EA stated.
