Dota 2 caster Sheever is winning her battle against breast cancer

Prolific Dota 2 caster Jorien “Sheever” van der Heijden gave fans a short update on her battle with breast cancer on Twitter.

“Recent MRI check: all clear”, Sheever tweeted. “Will receive checks once a year for a while.”

Naturally, the news was very well-received by the entire Dota 2 scene. A slew of pro players, organizations, and casters including Paul “Redeye” Chaloner, Theeban “1437” Siva, and Team Secret responded to the tweet expressing their support and congratulations to her. Hundreds of fans joined in as well.

Dota 2 community supported Sheever through the treatment

Sheever has been one of the top broadcast talents in Dota 2 since 2012, working a slew of majors as well as almost every installment of The International. In 2017 she revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The news was a shock to the community, but resulted in a wave of support for her.

Sheever documented her treatment and recovery in a series of blog posts on her website, tracking her chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and the symptoms that resulted. Her fight with the disease was also documented on camera and was turned into a short documentary by Valve in 2018 that premiered at The International 2018.

According to Sheever, her sister encouraged her to make her fight public. “You allowed people to be there for you when you were having good times, when you were at your best, why not also allow them to be there for you when you’re at your worst,” Sheever recounted.

While her fight with cancer has been an emotional one, Sheever looks to have it won. While she noted that she’ll be keeping track of it with her doctors for the foreseeable future, this is incredibly good news for her and all of Dota 2.
