The Nintendo Direct on February 8, 2023, was a showcase of what’s coming soon to the Nintendo Switch, including Master Detective Archives: Rain Code. But throughout the entire trailer for this game by Too Kyo Games, fans of the detective game series Danganronpa couldn’t help but notice the similarities.

Master Detective was revealed in 2022, showcasing an interesting cast of characters and a very spooky atmosphere. The main character, Yuma, has lost his memory but must use his detective abilities to solve a big mystery. He’s taken to a mystery labyrinth where mysteries from the real world materialize, and he must figure out the truth while fighting demons.

The premise sounds unique, but viewers noticed many similarities to a game called Danganronpa while watching the Nintendo Direct trailer. It seemed like it was almost copying the popular murder mystery series, with Yuma having to study crime scenes and come up with irregularities and clues that unveil the truth. A lot of the game’s style also seemed similar to Danganronpa. So what gives?

Is Master Detective Archives copying Danganronpa?

Well, the games are similar because they’re both made by the same people!

Danganronpa is a series created by Spike Chunsoft. But many former employees came together to found Too Kyo Games in 2017. This includes writers Kazutaka Kodaka and Takekuni Kitayama, video game composers Masafumi Takada and Jun Fukuda, and character designers Rui Komatsuzaki and Shimadoriru — all of which worked on Danganronpa.

This easily explains why the games have so many artistic similarities!

When does Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE come out?

The Nintendo Direct on February 8, 2023, revealed that Master Detective Archives is coming out on June 30, 2023. The game will be released for the Nintendo Switch exclusively.

Master Detective can be pre-ordered at GameStop and on Amazon. It’s currently $59.99. Or you can purchase the Mysteriful Limited Edition version for $109.99.
