Damwon Gaming and Invictus Gaming are advancing to the 2019 League of Legends World Championship Knockout Stage after taking the top two spots in group D.

The race was an incredibly close one. Damwon earned its spot fairly comfortably with a 5-1 record, but the second spot was decided in the final game which saw Invictus Gaming defeat Team Liquid.

It has been a tough road for both teams, but things are only going to get more treachorous from here.

Damwon Gaming earns first seed in LoL Worlds 2019 group with 5-1 record

DWG secured the first seed with five wins, and only one loss. On the last day of Worlds 2019’s group stage, the team took down both Team Liquid and ahq e-Sports Club in dominant fashion.

Their run wasn’t flawless however, as they struggled against Invictus Gaming.

DWG’s second game of the day against IG was a close one from start to finish, making for one of the most entertaining games at Worlds so far. Every team fight was a close one, but a battle around the Baron saw DWG take the buff, ace IG, and secure the win.

Invictus Gaming takes down Team Liquid for spot in LoL Worlds Knockout Stage

AHQ was no threat to IG, but the team was put in a stressful situation after the loss to DWG. In order to defend their world champion crown, they had to beat Team Liquid in the last match of the day. They managed survive and eliminate the last North American team standing at Worlds.

IG started the game strong, with Song “Rookie” Eui-jin taking a solo kill mid against Nicolaj “Jensen” Jensen for first blood. IG turned up the heat from there, but Liquid kept holding on through the mid-game. Once IG started snowballing, there was nothing more Liquid could do.

21 minutes into the game, IG already took down the first inhibitor. With a 5,000 gold lead, the Nexus followed soon after.

Damwon and Invictus Gaming are the two teams from the group that fans will see playing at the quarterfinals in Madrid, which kick off on October 26.
