Counter-Strike: Global Offensive isn’t just a visual game. Hearing opponents’ footsteps, gunfire, and bomb plants are an important part of the experience.

That can make enjoying the game difficult for deaf players, but a creative CSGO fan is addressing this by creating a configuration to help the hearing-impaired. The player shared his configuration on Reddit to overwhelmingly positive response.

The file gives players text cues on-screen when a sound file plays in-game. This allows deaf players to know that the sound file for a foot step or bomb plant is playing, but will not give exact information on where it is coming from.

The .CFG has been tested and is fully functional on official CSGO servers and will not flag VAC. Additionally, the creator reached out to FACEIT and received approval for the function on their matchmaking service. The file does not work with ESEA, but the creator is seeking a solution.

Many players with hearing issues commented on the post to thank the creator for his work. “I’m really grateful for this kind of thing, I’ve been facing an issue with my gameplay as my right ear doesn’t work at all,” one player said.

Some also added CSGO developer Valve should take initiative and make their games more accessible to disabled players.

There are some unanswered questions regarding the file being exploitable for players who are not deaf, however. Different games have offered various accessibility options for deaf players that can make subtle sound cues much easier to notice, which can hugely impact how an engagement plays out. Early impressions for this configuration suggest that it does not offer any serious competitive advantage.

Regardless, seeing players step up to help one another is always a refreshing sight. This is especially the case when it opens doors for those who might not be able to fully enjoy the game otherwise.
