The global esports industry has grown massively in the last several years and there are several different factors contributing to the growing popularity of esports among younger generations. One of the biggest is the social component of gaming and live streaming. YouTube Gaming, Twitch, and other popular video streaming platforms give esports fans a direct connection with their favorite esports teams and players.

The most popular esports games, such as League of Legends, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, have also become a part of mainstream culture. Following the tremendous rise in popularity of video games and esports in general, the number of esports viewers has increased massively.

According to the latest predictions, there will be over 30 million monthly viewers of esports tournaments and competitions just in the United States. The main question is, is skill more important than luck in esports gaming?

Luck vs. skill in esports

There is no doubt that the global esports industry has become a major part of pop culture. Many successful esports organizations, such as FaZe Clan, Cloud9, Gen.G, G2 esports, and Team Liquid are identifiable to people who don’t follow esports. The creativity of the entire esports industry is also another factor that contributes to the growing popularity of esports among younger generations.

By design and without exception, esports games rely more on skill than luck by a clear degree. This is major appeal of esports, and any other form of competition.

Skill always relies on different physical or strategic abilities. Skill can be learned and developed. While you need to work hard to refine your skills, a stroke of luck can happen to anyone, at any time, in anything. There are often some minor elements of luck in esports titles but these usually don’t have an impact in the outcome of a contest.

One of the best examples of a purely luck-based game is something like bingo with an outlet like 888bingo. Though people certainly enjoy bingo and playing together, the fact it’s purely driven by luck is a large part of why it hasn’t caught on as a spectator sport.

Other factors that impact esports performance

Many esports titles require lightning-quick reactions and have high execution barriers with minimal randomness involved. League of Legends, Rocket League, and StarCraft II are skill-based, with luck playing a minor role at most. Professional players invest a lot of time and energy into mastering their skills.

There are some games where luck plays a factor, most notably battle royale games where players drop onto a large map and have to scrounge for equipment that may be better or worse than their opponents. Still, to be a successful esports gamer you need to work on your motor skills, coordination, and cognitive abilities more than hoping for the best. The global esports market is valued at $1 billion according to this Statista report and its value is expected to increase in years to come.
