All we know about Splitgate 2, sequel to the hit FPS game
It’s been over five years since the first-person shooter game Splitgate launched and became one of the most popular new indie titles. Now, new Splitgate 2 details have been released by its developer, 1047 Games.
Ian Prolux, the CEO of 1047 Games, has put out a public statement clarifying certain details about Splitgate 2, as well as some surprising facts about its upcoming sequel. This came as the first cinematic trailer for the game dropped, teasing fans about what to expect.

What is Splitgate 2 release date?
According to Prolux, Splitgate 2 will be released to PS5 and PS4 when it launches in 2025. This is unlike its predecessor, which was first released in 2019 for Linux, Microsoft Windows on Steam, and Xbox One but only saw versions for PlayStation 4 and 5 and Xbox Series X/S years later.
It will remain a free-to-play multiplayer first-person shooter game but will feature factions and portals. There will be three factions, with players being able to choose based on their individual tastes.
First is a Titan-esque faction that can offer players a barrier from gunfire. Another faction is able to move swiftly around the arena using a jetpack. The third and final one can help freeze enemies for a brief period of time, reveal their location, and overall offer guidance for players. Multiple factions can be used in a single game, which means players enjoy more flexibility.
Prolux stressed that Splitgate 2 is an improvement on the first game because the team behind it is more experienced. As he explained, the 20 people who developed Spolitgate had never worked on a game before. Now, they have years of experience and contributions from industry veterans from companies like Riot and Ubisoft.
“1047 Games is no longer a handful of college grads hoping the servers don’t crash again. We’re a team of seasoned gaming veterans making a AAA shooter that we hope will surprise, amaze, and excite you,” he explained.
Will Splitgate 2 be a hero shooter?
Another change that has been made to Splitgate 3 is that it will not be a hero-shooter game. Some fans had assumed that it would be based on the trailer, but the official Splitgate Twitter/X account clarified this.
This isn’t the first bit of controversy that the project has seen, given that it was so heavily congested that players would wait hours to access it in the open beta. Then, unexpectedly, Splitgate stopped development in 2022, though we now know why.
In his public statement, Prolux explained why the team decided to stop development on the first Splitgate game in 2022. While it had performed well in the market, they wanted to inject new life into it, which would require a sequel. This was helped by the fact that 1047 Games was able to raise $100 million following the success of the first Splitgate.
Leveraging Unreal Engine 5 (as opposed to Unreal Engine 4, which was used for the first game), they created new characters, weapons, portals, and even new maps. The narrative within the game is also more emphasised, with the hope of creating a game that will be relevant even in a decade.
There have been five years of lead-up to this sequel, and 1047 Games seems confident about what is to come.
