LoL player finds way to play with Nintendo Switch Joy Cons
One might expect LoL to essentially require a mouse and keyboard, but this player found a completely new way to control his champion.
In a recent video, a German League of Legends player completed a game using Nintendo Switch Joy Cons to control his character. The player had bound the Joy Cons in a way so he could access all abilities while moving around on Summoner’s Rift, with the game playing out fairly normally. They picked Warwick as their champion and even managed to get quite a few kills in the process.
After trending on Reddit, the player explained a bit about what binds he used on the Joy Cons. With two Joy Cons, he was able to control the movement of Warwick and the camera itself. He had also bound all abilities to the buttons which worked fine for a rather simple champion like Warwick.
How do you play League of Legends with Joy Cons?
According to the Reddit thread, the Warwick player tried two different keybindings. The first is by binding the Q, W, E, and R ability to L, ZL, R, and ZR on the Joy Cons. With these bindings, all abilities would be triggered by using the shoulder buttons of either Joy Con. Another way to bind the keys was by adding all the abilities to the A, B, X, and Y buttons. In normal Switch games, these buttons are used for a big variety of things and now they have also worked as ability keys for League of Legends.
When asked by a Reddit user how he was able to kite the best, the answer was that the bindings on A, B, X, and Y helped use abilities easier but made it hard to kite. On the other hand, the secondary binding combination made it easier to kite but harder to use abilities effectively.
Overall, it seems pretty clear from this experiment that the perfect set of bindings for Switch Joy Cons haven’t been found yet. Even though this way of playing actually seems doable, it will take a lot of practice to make it an effective way of playing. With that said, playing with Joy Cons definitely seems like it's still fairly effective. Other players have previously attempted to play the game with everything from a bicycle to bananas.
Even though this was probably just a fun experiment, there might be several other players who want to try this out in the future.
