The Nintendo Switch has a surprising new game coming out this fall and it’s an interesting development for the platform.

Diablo 2 Resurrected is officially confirmed to be launching on the Nintendo Switch. The Switch version will be launching alongside the other ports of the game, which are coming to all major consoles and PC.

While it’s exciting to see Nintendo Switch players having the chance to enjoy more major console releases, these do warrant questions in regards to performance and online capability. Here’s everything that’s known about Diablo 2 Resurrected on Nintendo Switch, including whether it will be worth getting.

Will Diablo 2 Resurrected run well on Switch?

Diablo 2 Resurrected likely won’t run as well as other versions of the game. Though the Nintendo Switch has begun hosting more and more modern AAA titles of late, none of them have been the definitive versions of the games.

The best recent example of this is Apex Legends. The battle royale published by EA Games was ported to the Switch earlier this year, about two years after its launch on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Though Nintendo Switch owners can play all of the game’s characters, maps, and game modes on the platform, the Switch version runs very poorly.

Legends and environments have fewer polygons and muddy textures to make up for the Nintendo Switch’s lack of processing power, and the game experiences noticeable framerate drops whenever action picks up. Not only that but the game isn’t optimized at all for being played on an undocked Nintendo Switch, something that will leave players squinting to read how much ammo they have left between skirmishes.

It’s possible that Diablo 2 Resurrected will end up running well on Nintendo Switch. Though it’s an exciting game, Diablo 2 Resurrected is still an upscaled version of a 21-year-old game and Blizzard certainly has the capability of building a version of it that looks and feels solid on the console. But ultimately, even if Blizzard does top-notch work putting it on Nintendo Switch, it will still likely be running better on other consoles and best on PC.

When is Diablo 2 Resurrected coming out?

Diablo 2 Resurrected is set to be released on September 23, 2021. The game will launch simultaneously across PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S|X.
