Kog’Maw is about to get new visuals as part of a VFX update

Kog’Maw fans don’t have to wait much longer for the chamion’s upcoming VFX update, as it will soon hit the Public Beta Environment (PBE).

This was recently confirmed by Riot Games visual effects lead Oliver “Beardilocks” McDonald, who says that the update is coming soon with the intention to improve gameplay clarity and missile widths on Kog’Maw. The update will also give Kog’Maw’s Living Artillery ultimate a better edge indicator to help visualize the ability’s effective range.

The VFX update for Kog’Maw has been much needed for a long time now and will likely make it easier to play with and play against the Mouth of the Abyss. Kog’Maw is one of the original marksmen in League of Legends and has been suffering from outdated visuals for years now.

With the new update, it looks from the sneak peek that Kog’Maw will not only be easier to recognize on Summoner’s Rift, but will also get a more modern look that will better fit the current state of the game.

Kog’Maw’s Caustic Spittle (Q) will get a clearer look to differentiate it from his auto attacks. Kog’Maw will also get a clear purple aura when activating Bio-Arcane Barrage (W), which will help both teammates and enemies visualize when Kog’Maw enters his DPS mode.

The most important update may be to Kog’Maw’s ultimate. Up until now, it has been hard to spot Living Artillery (R) in big team fights and skirmishes, which can lead to confusion in the most intense moments of the game. With this new update, Riot will provide a better indicator of the ability before it lands, giving enemies a greater chance to play around the spell.

It’s still unknown when the Kog’Maw VFX update will be available for testing, but players should expect it within the next few PBE updates.

Is Kog’Maw good?

In season 11, Kog’Maw is almost exclusively played in the bot lane where he is currently sitting at a 51.68% win rate as of patch 11.7. Kog’Maw isn’t the strongest pick for the bot lane, but isn’t particularly weak either. When picking Kog’Maw in season 11, it’s important to have a support that can enable his carry potential and keep him away from harm. If no one is there to peel for Kog’Maw, he is often a hard champion to play.

Is Kog’Maw AP or AD?

Kog’Maw is one of the few champions in League of Legends that can work perfectly with both pure attack damage and ability power builds. His ability scaling is very much hybridized, which makes Kog’Maw suited as a marksman or as a mage. The most common way to play Kog’Maw historically is as a marksman in the bot lane, but certain metas have favored Kog’Maw as a mage in the mid lane.
