Team Liquid drops R6 coach Mav after domestic abuse accusation

Team Liquid has just released its Rainbow Six Seige coach Rafael “Mav” Loureiro following domestic abuse accusations. 

Mav’s ex-girlfriend accused the Brazilian R6 coach of domestic abuse last year. It was followed by an investigation that lasted two months. He was suspended on January 6 while Team Liquid awaited the results of the assessment. The organization then shared a statement on Twitter, stating that he’s been released effective immediately after the investigation had concluded that Mav’s past actions and behaviors violated the organization’s values and code of conduct.

“We appreciate those who shared their experiences so we could take the right steps,” Team Liquid said. “We’re dedicated to supporting communities in and outside of TL.” 

Team Liquid announced that they would be donating to Rio de Janeiro’s nonprofit CEPIA, which supports women’s rights. Brazil has been in the spotlight recently for femicide after Call of Duty: Mobile player Ingrid “Sol” was murdered by a male pro earlier this year. Sol’s team used the tragic death to highlight the domestic violence issues affecting women in Brazil. 

After Team Liquid announced its decision, Mav decided to share a tweet of his own. He apologized to the people he disappointed at Team Liquid and elsewhere. Mav stated that he was now a free agent and then included some of his accomplishments in Rainbow Six Seige. In the statement, Mav did not apologize to his ex-girlfriend for his actions. 

Mav is unfortunately not the only pro from the gaming community to be accused of such abuses. Over the past year, hundreds of women have come forward to tell their stories, with many big names in the gaming and esports communities being revealed as potential abusers and predators. 

What country is Team Liquid from?

While Team Liquid’s Rainbow Six Seige team has a huge following in Brazil, the organization is originally from the Netherlands. The esports organization recently opened a state-of-the-art facility there. Team Liquid also has a facility in Santa Monica, California.
