G2 Esports, Rekkles dealt surprise loss from Fnatic in LEC

Fnatic took down G2 Esports in unexpected fashion in their first LEC clash of 2021.

A lot was on the line for both teams when the G2 and Fnatic rivalry unfolded for the first time in 2021. During the offseason, the rivalry got even more intense as G2 picked up bot laner Martin “Rekkles” Larsson. This put Fnatic in a difficult spot ahead of the 2021 season, but left them hungry to take back the top spot in Europe. Against all odds, Fnatic and its aggressive playstyle were enough to take down G2 Esports. 

As expected, the match was aggressive with kills all over the map. Neither team was afforded any breathing room, providing viewers with a very entertaining game. Fans are used to seeing G2 be very aggressive and thrive in chaos, but this time it was Fnatic that led the charge. 

With early kills in both solo lanes and the jungle, Fnatic had a solid gold lead after 15 minutes. G2 Esports tried to catch up through its own aggression, but it was never enough to throw off Fnatic. 

With almost one kill each minute, jungler Oskar “Selfmade” Boderek and top laner Gabriël “Bwipo” Rau dominated the map and built up Taliyah and Volibear, respectively. The duo kept brawling and forcing fights all over the map and G2 Esports jumped right in to meet them. At 25 minutes, Fnatic was more than 7,000 gold ahead with a Baron and Inhibitor advantage. While G2 is known for making crazy comebacks, Fnatic didn’t give them the opportunity. 

The revamped Fnatic squad ultimately took down G2’s Nexus after 28 minutes and got to show that the team can still play at a high level without Rekkles. 

Fnatic moving up LEC standings in 2021 Spring Split

With the win over G2 Esports, Fnatic is on a two-game winning streak and starting to ramp up after a poor start to the split. With three losses during the first two weeks, Fnatic still has some climbing ahead of them but they’re looking up to the challenge. Fnatic ends the third week with a 4-3 scoreline, putting them tied for fourth place alongside MAD Lions and Excel Esports. 

Fnatic will clash with Excel Esports in its next game, which will be important to reach the top three. The match kicks off on February 12.
