Overwatch 2 may be coming later than fans expect amid delays

Reading time: 2 min

Famous Overwatch streamer Metro has dropped a rumor that Overwatch 2 is experiencing more delays and won’t be releasing anywhere near the February BlizzConline date.

Overwatch 2, the sequel to Game of the Year winner Overwatch, has been long-awaited after its 2019 announcement date. Developers teased a PvE mode with mission-style chapters where players can learn more about the lore of Overwatch. They also announced early in 2020 that there would be no additional heroes added to Overwatch until the new game launched.

If Metro is right, the game has been even further delayed and won’t be releasing soon. Metro is a very popular Overwatch streamer who has been right about his leaks in the past, most notably the leak of the announcement of Overwatch 2 ahead of Blizzcon in 2019.

When is Overwatch 2 coming out?

According to Metro, the development team has experienced long delays due to working from home, which has led to internal issues. All of these issues have culminated in a slow working pace which means deadlines are not being met, and the game is further delayed.

Metro also states that Blizzard will only show some gameplay and announce some heroes exclusive to the sequel, but fans will have to wait even longer for a release date.

Fans are sure to be disappointed if this is true when BlizzConline comes around. The online-only convention takes place February 19-20 and Overwatch has been telling fans that more information will be revealed at the convention. Because the game was announced in 2019, fans were really hoping for a release date in early 2021.

If rumors are true, no one will know when the game is coming out and it is entirely possible that the game is delayed into 2022. Because developers have told players that no new heroes will be added until the release of Overwatch 2, they are becoming impatient with the lack of meaningful content.

It doesn’t help that Blizzard has released job listings for Overwatch 2. This indicates that the game may have a long way to go before its completion. The Overwatch team section of the careers page shows a whopping 43 listings.

Is Overwatch dying?

While Overwatch is doing okay in terms of player count, there is some uncertainty as to how for how the Overwatch League will go if the game doesn’t launch this year. After event organizers were forced to pull their in-person matches in 2020, viewership has been down and the hype that in-person events created has been diminished.

While these rumors have certainly not been confirmed, fans will have to wait until BlizzConline to have any concrete information.
