Kyogre and Groudon are returning to raids tomorrow after being absent from Pokemon GO raids for over a year. The two legendary Pokemon will be available for seven days, meaning trainers have a week to snag themselves these popular, powerful Pokemon.

Which Pokemon to use to catch Kyogre

With an HP of 15,000, an attack of 225, and a defense of 191, Kyogre is a powerful Pokemon that trainers will have to strategically take down. Kyogre is a Water-type legendary Pokemon, meaning its weaknesses are Lightning and Grass. Trainers will see a lot of these Pokemon types on the list of strongest Kyogre counters.

Using each Pokemon and its moves, Pokebattler came up with the top 10 Kyogre counters to use during the raid. Keep in mind that the raid analysis was based off simulating combat with a defending Kyogre with 54,411 CP and level 40 attackers. Pokebattler performed a whopping 501,400 simulations to come up with this list, so these are some pretty promising Pokemon along with their strongest attacks against Kyogre:

  • Shadow Raikou (Thunder Shock, Wild Charge)
  • Zekrom (Charge Beam, Wild Charge)
  • Mega Venusaur (Vine Whip, Frenzy Plant)
  • Shadow Magnezone (Spark, Wild Charge)
  • Shadow Electivire (Thunder Shock, Wild Charge)
  • Shadow Zapdos (Thunder Shock, Thunderbolt)
  • Mega Ampharos (Volt Switch, Zap Cannon)*
  • Shadow Mewtwo (Confusion, Thunderbolt)
  • Raikou (Thunder Shock, Wild Charge)
  • Shadow Venusaur (Vine Whip, Frenzy Plant)

Before facing a Kyogre, trainers should power up their counters as much as possible. Of course, with just one day to go it’s going to be a bit tricky to power up this many Shadow and Mega Pokemon. If trainers don’t think they will have any of the previous 10 Pokemon ready for battle, they can try Tangrowth’s Vine Whip, Electivire’s Thunder Shock, Magnezone’s Wild Charge, Zapdos’ Thunder Shock, or Roserade’s Razor Leaf.

How many trainers are required to catch Kyogre during raid?

Trainers will definitely need to work together to take down a Kyogre. Most Pokemon GO players should look to get about five to six trainers together for a reliable shot at catching this legendary Pokemon. Three top trainers rocking some of the top counters mentioned above may also have a fair chance.

Kyogre raid tips and tricks for Pokemon GO

Once trainers have their group and powered-up Pokemon, it’s time to take down a Kyogre. Keep in mind that Kyogre has a small catch circle and moves from side to side from a far distance. This can make it a tricky Pokemon to catch, even compared to other legendaries.

To deal with this challenge, use the Circle Lock Technique. This will guarantee Great or Excellent throws. Have Golden Razz Berries on hand as well. This is the best way to catch a Kyogre.

There’s a one in 20 chance that the Kyogre will be Shiny. That’s because legendary Pokemon all have those same odds. While catching a Shiny is ideal, keep a closer eye on the Pokemon’s stats. The 100% IV Kyogre will have a CP of 2,351 in normal weather conditions. It goes down to 1,939 in boosted conditions.
