Fans waiting for the 2021 LEC Spring Split to kick off now know what to look forward to, as Riot has revealed the league’s full schedule for the first half of the year.

With the major competitive leagues starting back up for 2021, the LEC is back after an intense offseason with a lot of new faces and old stars who have left for other regions. To start off the 2021 LEC season, G2 Esports will clash with MAD Lions in a matchup that should be strong. The two teams met each other in three best-of-five series in 2020, and even though this match will just be a best-of-one, it looks to be an action-packed opening to the season.

When does the LEC 2021 season start?

When the first day of the regular split kicks off on January 22, fans can also look forward to four other matches. All 10 teams will battle on Summoner’s Rift during the first day and several matchups could turn into bloodbaths and upsets.

Another exciting match looks to be Astralis against SK Gaming. This match won’t be a battle between two LEC favorites, but will instead be a match between two organizations who have bet heavily on rookies. Astralis is fielding two LEC rookies, while SK Gaming has four players who have never played in the LEC before. One of them is support Erik “Treatz” Wessén who recently won the 2020 LCS Summer Split with Team SoloMid.

The first day of the 2021 LEC Spring Split will include:

  • G2 Esports vs. MAD Lions
  • Astralis vs. SK Gaming
  • Rogue vs. Excel Esports
  • Team Vitality vs. FC Schalke 04
  • Misfits Gaming vs. Fnatic

Just like the last split, the LEC will run each week from Friday to Sunday during the regular split. The regular split will consist of a best-of-one double round-robin, where all teams will meet each other twice. The regular split is followed up by the playoffs, where the six best teams will compete for the 2021 LEC Spring Split trophy and a spot at the Mid-Season Invitational.

The LEC returns live on January 22.

How does the LEC work?

The LEC is a franchised league made up of the 10 best League of Legends teams in Europe. Each team has bought its spot in the league, which means that new teams can’t qualify for the league. Each LEC season is built up around two splits that lead up to big international tournaments. The summer split is the most important, as it leads up to the annual World Championship. The best LEC teams will therefore be able to qualify for the World Championship and represent Europe.

Who won LEC 2020?

Both the spring and summer splits of the LEC 2020 season were won by G2 Esports. The two LEC finals of 2020 had the exact same outcome, as G2 managed to beat Fnatic 3-0. For 2021, Fnatic looks to get its revenge but it will likely be even harder than it was in 2020.

Where is LEC played?

The LEC is usually played from a live studio in Berlin. All coverage of the LEC is usually broadcasted from this studio with a stage, small crowd, and the whole production with casters and analysts. In 2020, most of the LEC coverage was done remotely and it seems like the 2021 season will continue with that format.
