Cody Sun splits from 100 Thieves ahead of LCS free agency
Cody Sun won’t be returning to 100 Thieves in 2021 and is officially a free agent ahead of the 2021 season. This is a familiar scenario, since it’s not the first time Cody Sun has broken up with 100 Thieves. Cody Sun was part of the roster that helped 100 Thieves qualify to the 2018 World Championship. Ahead of the tournament, Cody Sun got benched and replaced with 100 Thieves Academy ADC Richard "Rikara" Samuel Oh.
The benching ahead of Worlds led to a complicated break up between 100 Thieves and Cody Sun. The ADC landed on his feet and secured a starting spot with Clutch Gaming. Wearing Dignitas’ colors in 2019, Cody Sun qualified once again to the World Championship and this time, he got to play. After the event, Cody Sun returned to 100 Thieves in one of free agency's bigger surprises.
100 Thieves' split with Cody Sun another questionable move
100 Thieves is known for both great merch and questionable roster moves. The organization has had a number of ugly splits with League of Legends players over the years. This has led to some fans being leery of official messages put out by 100 Thieves, even when they are seemingly positive. Though Cody Sun is a real talent who has helped 100 Thieves to most of its best moments in LoL, that history makes this move generally unsurprising.
100Thieves and I have decided to part ways.— 100T Cody Sun (@CodySun) November 10, 2020
Effective immediately, I will be a Free Agent heading into the 2021 season.
I am very grateful for the opportunities given to me by 100T, as well as very excited for what's to come.
For 2021, I wish to reach the top.
As for Cody Sun's next step, there are some options available to him. Immortals is looking to rebuild its roster after the signing of head coach André "Guilhoto" Guilhoto. Dignitas could also be looking for an upgrade and Cody Sun has experience working with support Zaqueri "aphromoo" Black, having played with him on 100 Thieves in the past. Evil Geniuses is rumored to be looking for a replacement for Bae "Bang" Jun-sik, the player that actually replaced Cody Sun in 100 Thieves.
LCS free agency opens on November 16.
