The 2020 League of Legends World Championship semifinals turned into the most-watched match of the year.

The semifinal between DAMWON Gaming and G2 Esports had the highest peak viewership at this year’s Worlds event, despite not even going to all five games. The match had been hyped up on social media all week. It all culminated with a peak viewership of 2,713,380 according to Echarts. This is almost 300,000 viewers more than the previous Worlds 2020 peak seen between Fnatic and Top Esports in the quarterfinals.

The viewers are based on English and Korean streaming sites and don’t include Chinese viewers. The match was against the first seed from Europe and Korea, so it’s no surprise that the match had a lot of excited viewers watching.

The highest platform peak came from YouTube, where the stream peaked at 1,278,244 viewers despite Twitch usually being the preferred platform for western viewers. Twitch got close to beating that peak with 1,239,005 viewers watching at the same time at some point in the match.

Even though DAMWON is a fairly new team, it is quickly becoming a fan favorite. Korean fans love the way that DAMWON has innovated the Korean playstyle by mastering the laning phase and playing at a high pace. Their semifinal against G2 didn’t only grant them a ticket to the Worlds final, but also marked the team’s high point in popularity.

Not only did DAMWON set a new personal viewer record, but they also set the record for the fastest game at a World Championship ever. DAMWON took down G2 in the fourth and final game of the series in speedy fashion, needing 19 minutes and three seconds to close it out. This is almost two minutes faster than the previous record set by Longzhu Gaming of 20 minutes and 48 seconds.

The best peak viewership matches at Worlds 2020

Worlds 2020 has been great in terms of viewership and continues to pull impressive numbers. Only two games are left at Worlds, but that is plenty of time to set a new record. As the stakes get even higher in the final, it’s not unlikely this current record will be beaten.

Here are the top five games at Worlds 2020 in terms of peak viewership.

  • Semifinals, G2 Esports vs. DAMWON Gaming – 2.713.380 peak viewers
  • Quarterfinals, Fnatic vs. Top Esports – 2,422,647 peak viewers
  • Quarterfinals, G2 Esports vs. Gen.G – 2,312,166 peak viewers
  • Group stage, LGD Gaming vs. Gen.G – 1,847,987 peak viewers
  • Group stage, DAMWON Gaming vs. Rogue – 1,800,177 peak viewers

Worlds 2020 continues on October 25 when Top Esports and Suning hit Summoner’s Rift in the last semifinal.
