It will most likely be a close fight when G2 Esports clashes with Gen.G in the 2020 League of Legends World Championship quarterfinals.

G2 entered the tournament as a dark horse despite their dominant performance at last year’s international events. Even though G2 picked up both LEC trophies this year, they have been looking weaker and definitely beatable this year. G2 is still very experienced and knows how to handle pressure on the big Worlds stage, so there is no guarantee that the Kings of Europe won’t make a deep run again.

On the opposite side, LCK’s third seed Gen.G is ready to take on the European stars. Even though Gen.G was sent as the third seed, they did top group C after beating Fnatic, LGD Gaming, and Team SoloMid. Gen.G has been considered the second strongest Korean squad by many experts and so far they have proven itself worthy of that title. The team’s controlled playstyle has led them to some solid wins at Worlds 2020, but pulling it off against G2 will be more difficult.

Two different styles clash at Worlds 2020

The matchup between G2 and Gen.G is very interesting because the teams are known for completely opposite play styles. G2 is usually an aggressive team, never afraid to take fights or pick off-meta champions to surprise the opponent.

On the other hand, Gen.G is more predictable in their style, but is still hard to punish for it. With solid carries such as bot laner Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk and mid laner Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong, Gen.G isn’t afraid of sacrificing early-game priority to farm up and wait for the late game to erupt.

This quarterfinal will be a match between two very different styles of play, which makes it hard to predict the outcome. On paper, this is the closest quarterfinal of them all, and it could potentially end up as a five-game series.

The Worlds meta has shown that many games are carried through the jungle, which fits G2 pretty well. Jungler Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski is always up to play a carry champion and stands ready to snowball his strong solo laners. Gen.G jungler Kim “Clid” Tae-min has also shown some great performances on carry junglers incluiding Nidalee and Graves, so whoever comes out on top in the jungle might decide the outcome of the game.

G2 will likely have a more aggressive approach and will try to break the control of Gen.G. If G2 manages to interrupt the early game, they can roll their way to victory. If they fail to do so, it is likely that Gen.G will outperform G2 in late-game team fights and in the macro game, even though G2 has been practicing that style throughout the year.

G2 and Gen.G are almost even at Worlds 2020

The quarterfinal between G2 and Gen.G is almost as even as it gets according to the bookmakers. Even though the two teams have completely different playstyles, they are considered even on paper and it’s hard to say which style will prevail.

A win for Gen.G gives odds 1.73, while believing in G2 gives a slightly higher odds at 1.97. It’s all a matter of who is most ready on the day and who is able to counter the opposing style the best. Believing in G2 gives slightly higher odds, but this series can go either way

Gen.G and G2 Esports will hit Summoner’s Rift on October 18.
