Should TSM keep Treatz instead of Biofrost after Worlds 2020?

Team SoloMid support Erik “Treatz” Wessén recently announced that he is exploring new opportunities for the 2021 season.

Treatz had a great year at TSM, where he got the chance to play in the LCS after years of solid performances in the Academy league. Even though Treatz got the starting spot for a few weeks, he still had to share playtime with veteran support Vincent “Biofrost” Wang. Biofrost ended up earning back his spot for the 2020 LCS Summer Playoffs and also played every game at the 2020 World Championship.

Treatz will now look for possible opportunities in the upcoming season, but could still potentially stay with TSM. His contract is up on November 16 just like many other players in the LCS.

Should TSM keep Treatz on the roster?

The biggest question is if Treatz will stay with TSM or accept an offer from another team. Treatz has proven himself as a very talented support who can still develop as a player. Even though Treatz is 24 years old, he is still relatively new to the big stage and will likely further improve as he spends more time playing against top opposition.

His time in the Academy league has given him the stage experience and the skills needed to play on a top-tier team. If TSM wants to invest in the future, Treatz might be an important player to hold on to.

Biofrost didn’t impress at Worlds 2020

After TSM’s big flop at Worlds 2020, it isn’t unthinkable that the team will be looking to swap out players from the main roster. While Treatz might be leaving, Biofrost could be in danger of being replaced as Treatz takes over.

Biofrost was generally solid throughout the year, but his Worlds performance was nothing to write home about. His overall stats were below average and he didn’t manage to find the confidence that he had in the LCS summer playoffs.

He had several instances on engage-heavy champions such as Leona in which he missed an opportunity to get off a good engagement or to peel for his teammates. With a total of 18 deaths over six games and the third-worst KDA of all supports at the main event, Biofrost will need to step it up in 2021.

Several LoL teams could be interested in Treatz

Even if TSM wants to keep Treatz, it probably won’t be easy. The Swedish support has reached a level where he won’t be satisfied with a spot in the Academy league, or even sharing playtime with another player. Treatz has shown enough to be considered for a starting spot in the LCS, and perhaps even the LEC if some organizations are interested.

The possible teams from the LCS that could be interested in Treatz are plenty. The biggest problem is that most supports from the LCS are contracted until next year, with the exception of Golden Guardians’ Choi “Huhi” Jae-hyun. This means that teams are not as likely to swap out on the support position.

With that said, a player like Treatz will likely be able to find opportunities to replace the current starting support on teams such as Dignitas, CLG, Immortals, and perhaps others as well. The potential new team would have to give up an import slot to have Treatz on their squad, but he has proven to be worth the cost.

It’s also possible that some LEC teams could be interested in Treatz and allow him to go back to his home region to play. The LEC isn’t necessarily known for its support players, so Treatz could end up being a valuable asset. A good bet would be Astralis, who is looking to rebuild the roster after rebranding from Origen. It’s still a big question mark who the team will field from 2021, so Treatz could be a nice candidate, and the move would bring him closer to his home nation of Sweden.
