FlyQuest needs upset at Worlds 2020 to advance from groups

Reading time: 2 min

FlyQuest lost its second game at the 2020 League of Legends World Championship group stage after falling short against DragonX.

The loss to DRX makes it difficult for FlyQuest to advance from the group, with only three games left to play. It seems likely that the LCS underdogs will have to make an upset against either Top Esports or DRX to have a chance at securing a top-two seed in the group. They will also have to beat Unicorns of Love one more time.

FlyQuest has performed fairly well despite the negative record. A clutch win against UoL granted the team some confidence, which was clearly shown in their match against DRX. Sadly for FlyQuest, DRX had the superior composition and coordination in team fights.

The loss leaves FlyQuest at a weird spot going into the final round-robin, where they most likely have to pick up more than one win.

Santorin and IgNar have to step up further at Worlds 2020

FlyQuest has had a mixture of good and lacking individual performances at this year’s Worlds. Mid laner Tristan “PowerOfEvil” Schrage has been performing the most consistently, while jungler Lucas “Santorin” Larsen and support Lee “IgNar” Dong-geun have been shaky despite how important they are to the team.

IgNar is usually the most important player for team fights and roams, but he has not been able to find the form that he showcased in the LCS. His performance against DRX was especially underwhelming. He picked Pantheon to make plays, but ended up diving onto the DRX backline without much coordination with his team.

The failed engagements resulted in unnecessary deaths and ultimately became a way for DRX to snowball the game.

Santorin has not had a bad tournament, but he hasn’t been popping off either. FlyQuest often relies on a carry performance from Santorin and will need that in the last round-robin as well. Santorin needed to be put on a comfort pick to stand a chance against Hong “Pyosik” Chang-hyeon and Hung “Karsa” Hao-Hsuan in the group.

As proven against UoL, the FlyQuest squad is able to play really well when they are on comfort picks. If the whole team is on the same page, then their team fights can be really scary. It might be enough to make an upset against the two top teams in the group, but the stars will have to align.

TOP and DRX stands in FlyQuest’s way at Worlds 2020

To make it to the quarterfinals, FlyQuest will have to get past either Top Esports or DRX. They have already lost once to both teams, but the games still left fans somewhat optimistic.

The game against Top Esports was a pretty big blow out, but FQ still showed some signs of life. Since that game, FlyQuest has been improving and was able to go toe-to-toe with DRX for a big part of the game.

FlyQuest still needs the last edge to actually make an upset seem likely, which includes better individual performances and also better communication in hectic situations.

FlyQuest will play its last three games on October 11.
