Fortnite fans were excited when Tyler “Ninja” Blevins returned to Twitch earlier this year. But the streaming sensation mostly switched to Valorant soon after.

While Valorant, Among Us, and Fall Guys have been taking over the streaming scene, Fortnite fans may feel like the battle royale is losing its following and players. Even though it’s now sharing more of the streaming spotlight than before, Fortnite has consistently been a popular title in 2020. Is it continuing to grow as 2021 approaches and more titles continue to grab players’ attention?

Is Fortnite still popular in 2020?

Epic Games doesn’t often offer straight numbers on the Fortnite player count. So how do we know if Fortnite is still a popular game? The number of registered players is available thanks to Statistica. According to their research, the amount of players has steadily risen since the game’s release. In March 2019, they reported 250 million players. In May 2020 there were 350 million, a 100 million jump in a little more than a year’s time.

There’s no denying that more people choose to download Fortnite each month. But how many are actually actively playing the game?

Let’s look at the game itself. There was a Travis Scott concert in-game in April earlier this year. The concert saw over 12.3 million concurrent players online, meaning that a great many people were watching at once.

That is significantly more than the 10.8 million concurrent players that jammed out to Marshmello’s concert in 2019, showing yet more growth for Epic’s popular title.

And even though Ninja and other streamers have started to ditch Fortnite, there’s still a lot of people streaming and playing the game. The Fortnite category is currently ranked number five on Twitch. In the past seven days, the game has had over 107,000 viewers on average. While more competitive players have become frustrated with the beginner-friendly updates and a perceived lack of balance patches, Fortnite fans still have fun checking out streamers broadcasting the lively and colorful game.
