Overwatch League introduces the 2020 Role Stars
Blizzard has announced the 2020 Overwatch League Role Stars.
The Role Stars is the OWL's "ultimate roster of the year." They described it as a "standout team" that represents the "cream of the crop." The team was developed by head coaches, general managers, broadcast talent, and OWL media casting votes for eligible players in each role. According to Overwatch League's official press release, players had to meet a 40% maps-played minimum over the course of the season to be considered.
Stats producer Ben "CaptainPlanet" Trautman presented the 2020 Role Stars, starting with damage.
Overwatch League Role Stars 2020: Damage
Byung-Sun "Fleta" Kim of the Shanghai Dragons was the first DPS player announced. He was first in most damage heroes played during the season, playing seven different DPS heroes for a minimum 50 minutes each. That flexibility is what made Fleta stand out over the course of the 2020 season. He particularly shined on Tracer, standing atop in first elimination rate as Tracer (17.6%) and second in teamfight win rates with the time-traveling hero (13.4). Fleta dominated with Mei as well, winning 56.1% of his teamfights.
Paris Eternal's Yeong-Han "Sp9rk1e" Kim won a spot for being first in teamfight win rate as Genji (54.6%). Jae-Hyeok "Carpe" Lee of the Philadelphia Fusion was unsurprisingly on the list for being the most skilled Ashe player in the league. He finished first in first elimination rate (20.9%), first in teamfight win rate after first elimination (87.9%), and first in teamfight win rate (59.2%). Seon-Chang "Ans" Lee put San Francisco on the map thanks to his Widowmaker skills, while Shanghai Dragons' Jae-Won "Lip" Lee shined on Sombra.
Overwatch League Role Stars 2020: Tank
The Shanghai Dragons shined in the tank role as well. Eui-Seok "Fearless" Lee earned his spot on the Role Stars for being first in teamfight win rate by a tank on all heroes and for his skilled Winston play. He was second in final blows per 10 minutes as Winston (7.9) and second for teamfight win rate as Winston (57.1%). Shanghai Dragons' Jun-Woo "Void" Kang was on the roster for his domination with Sigma. He came in first for hero damage per 10 minutes with Sigma, a whopping 12,366.
Another Sigma player was also on the roster. San Francisco Shock's Hyo-Bin "Choihyobin" Choi. He was first in teamfight win rate as Sigma (55.7%), but also first in teamfight win rate as all off-tank heroes at 55.8%. Guangzhou Charge's Gi-Cheol "Cr0ng" Nam also made the roster for his off-tank diversity.
Overwatch League Role Stars 2020: Support
Overwatch League fans were not shocked to see Philadelphia Fusion's Kyeong-Bo "Alarm" Kim on the squad, along with his lengthy list of accomplishments. He was second in teamfight win rate by support on all heroes, coming in at 55.2%. He was first in teamfight win rate as Baptiste (60.2), first in final blows per 10 minutes as Zenyatta in teamfights (7.6), first in first elimination rate as Ana in teamfights (4.8%), first in hero damage per 10 minutes as Brigitte (5,480), and first in final blows per 10 minutes as Moira in teamfights (6.1). Alarm had high-ranking accomplishments with every support hero.
Shanghai Dragons made the support list as well, with Jae-Gon "Leejaegon" lee being recognized for his Lucio prowess. He was first in final blows per 10 minutes as Lucio in teamfights (5.6) and first in knockback kills per 10 minutes as Lucio (10.5). The Shock's Min-Ki "Viol2t" Park shined on Baptiste, while Paris Eternal's Brice "FDGod" Monscavoir was impressive on both Lucio and Brigitte.
