G2 Esports crushes Fnatic to win 2020 LEC Summer Finals

G2 Esports is the 2020 LEC Summer Split champion after a 3-0 victory against Fnatic.

This is the fourth LEC trophy in a row for G2, further solidifying the team as the kings of Europe. The clean sweep was almost a shot-for-shot remake of the spring finals, and leaves Fnatic not really looking like a real rival to G2.

G2 Esports dominated Fnatic in another LEC final

Both teams looked towards comfort picks in the first game, except for G2’s Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski who wanted to try out the jungle Shen that Mingyi “Spica” Lu has been using in the LCS. The game started out perfectly for Fnatic with a kill in the bot lane, but then G2 put its foot on the pedal. Jankos was all over the map, securing one kill after the other. The pressure from Jankos was enough for mid laner Rasmus “Caps” Winther to carry the game on LeBlanc.

Following a dominant performance by Caps, it was Tim “Nemesis” Lipovšek’s turn to showcase his skill in the mid lane. With three kills in the first 10 minutes on Corki, he was all set to tie up the series for Fnatic. It was not easy though, as G2 constantly answered back when Fnatic made an aggressive play. As many times before, Fnatic crumbled under the pressure when it mattered most, letting G2 get to match point.

A reverse sweep is a rare sight at this level, but Fnatic had to go for it. With a strong Caitlyn and Bard bot lane it was up to Martin “Rekkles” Larsson and Zdravets “Hylissang” Galabov to get ahead, but G2 continued its strong play. The early and mid-game went fine for Fnatic, but once again G2 had the upper hand in the late game with Caps and Jankos on a tear. Fnatic kept fighting to the very end, but a backdoor play from Caps ended the series in a sweep for G2 Esports.

G2 Esports secures LEC first seed at LoL Worlds 2020

Winning the LEC trophy also means that G2 will be the European first seed at the 2020 League of Legends World Championship. This puts G2 in a perfect position to repeat last year’s performance where they went all the way to the finals before losing to FunPlus Phoenix.

G2 has not been looking as strong this year compared to last year, but they have proven they can show up when it matters. This will be important at Worlds 2020 where opponents such as Top Esports and DAMWON Gaming awaits.

Worlds will kick off on September 25 with the play-in stage. G2 won’t be entering the tournament until the main event, which begins on October 3.
