G2 Esports and MAD Lions will clash in the winner’s bracket round 1 at the 2020 LEC Summer Split playoffs on Saturday, in an important match to decide qualification directly to the semifinals.

MAD Lions performed well throughout most of the  split, finishing in second place right behind Rogue. MAD Lions has shown that they can beat any given LEC team on the right day.

G2 on the other hand has been shaky all split, losing games to opponents that they normally wouldn’t. G2 started to pick up the pace in the final weeks of the regular split with six wins in a row, giving fans more hope for the playoffs.

The match between MAD Lions and G2 has been hyped up ever since the spring playoffs when the teams met twice. MAD Lions managed to beat G2 in the first series, but the MSI champions got the final word in the second meeting.

The teams are 1-1 against each other in the summer, so the upcoming best-of-five series might be very close. Both teams have an aggressive play style which can result in some messy but exciting games. The key match-ups will be in the jungle and mid lane, where the game is most likley to swing in either team’s favor. Up until now, Rasmus “Caps” Winther has been a force to be reckoned with, so Marek “Humanoid” Brázda and Zhiqiang “Shadow” Zhao will have to get a leg up early to stop the Danish mid laner.

G2’s weak point has been in the bot lane, where Luka “Perkz” Perković especially has struggled to find consistency this year. On the other side, Matyáš  “Carzzy” Orság and Norman “Kaiser” Kaiser have been dominating both in the laning phase and in team fights, so the Lions might have a clear win condition through bot.

G2 heavily favored to win against MAD Lions

Even though MAD Lions played better than G2 during the summer split, it’s hard not to favor G2 in an important best-of-five series. A G2 win is currently giving odds at 1.4, with MAD Lions at odds of 2.7, with other markets giving similar odds. Despite the odds difference, MAD Lions has shown before that they can make an upset when no one is expecting it so we could get a close series. This might make a MAD Lions selection prudent, as the degree to which G2 Esports is favored doesn’t quite line up with the two teams’ performance in 2020.

The winner of the match will move on to the semifinals, while the loser will have to battle their way through the lower bracket.
