G2 Esports vs FC Schalke 04: 2020 LEC Summer betting analysis
Melany M. June 18, 2020
G2 Esports and FC Schalke 04 are meeting in Week 2 of the 2020 LEC Summer Split. This is not the usual one-sided match where G2 is expected to destroy the competition in 25 minutes. Somehow, Schalke always finds a way to get a few punches in and annoy G2. In the spring, a winless Schalke squad managed to get a victory against first-place G2, and there’s a chance it might get its first win of the summer in a similar fashion.
G2 didn’t have the week one everyone expected. G2 picked up a victory against MAD Lions on Friday and ended up losing both matches on Saturday and Friday. The team has allegedly lost practice time due to personal issues that kept Perkz from joining the roster before Friday.
A lack of practice might not be the only issue that G2 will face in the early stages of the season. G2 keeps painting itself into a corner in the drafting phase by picking compositions with little damage and no engagement tools. In the match against Vitality, G2 kept going for plays that added up to nothing and were ultimately just a waste of time. G2 forced the team fights hoping to get away with it just because they are, historically, the better players. Vitality punished them hard, and Schalke might be able to do the same.
To no one’s surprise, Schalke started the split with three losses and is just one game away from reliving the 0-4 meme dream. Schalke made adjustments to its roster, and while it’s not on the level fans wanted, it’s a clear improvement from the spring lineup.
Schalke is slowly coming together as a team and is showing promising signs. Schalke is keeping a proactive attitude and going for plays all over the map, a welcom change of pace from the passiveness of spring. There are still mistakes to be fixed, but it doesn’t look as doomed as spring did for a team that was accustomed to being in the top four.
It’s too early to talk about playoffs in the LEC for Schalke, but a win over G2 would be a big step in the right direction.
Can Schalke upset G2 in the LEC?
Numbers are not on Schalke’s favor for this match with 1.13 for G2 versus Schalke’s 4.90. This matchup will be less about the individual performances and more about the teams as a whole. If Schalke wants a chance, it needs to stay proactive and not fall into a reactive style. It also needs to keep up with G2’s relentless aggression that usually starts at level three.
