Riot Games revealed the World Championship skins for FunPlus Phoenix and the community is not fully sold on the concept.

FunPlus Phoenix took the 2019 World Championship by storm, becoming the third Chinese team to win the event. There were a lot of discussions about which champion the players would pick for their custom in-game skins. It went as follows:

  • Kim “GimGoon” Han-saem, Gangplank
  • Gao “Tian” Tian-Liang, Lee Sin
  • Kim “Doinb” Tae-sang, Malphite
  • Lin “Lwx” Wei-Xiang, Vayne
  • Liu “Crisp” Qing-Song, Thresh

Even though he didn’t play Malphite in the event, Doinb chose this champion because it’s the only one his wife plays. The recall animations for the team include a variety of references to their individual habits, like GimGoon’s tendency to press his keyboard too hard and Lwx’s group of stray cats that he feeds outside of the gaming house. Doinb’s skin includes the dance that he posted during worlds to taunt G2 Esports before the finals.

On April 14, Riot revealed the splash art and animation for the new skins, and the reveal got mixed reactions from the community.

Are FPX LoL skins a flop?

The concept for the FPX skins resembles the 90’s TV show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers with helmets, transformations, and flashy effects. The color palette includes tones of red, yellow, and navy blue.

One of the criticisms is the lack of visual clarity in the splash art, as it’s difficult to make out some of the champions. Some fans deemed the skins as “generic” and “not detailed enough” to be World Championship skins. Of course, it’s easy to reach this conclusion when you compare FPX’s skins to the complex concept used for the Invictus Gaming skins last year.

Not everyone is unhappy with the FPX skins. Some fans pointed out that while simple, this concept has never been used before in League of Legends. The FPX skins are hitting the PBE server soon and are likely to hit the live server with patch 10.9.

It’s too soon to say if FPX’s skins will be a total flop. Even though the broad majority of the community seems to dislike the skins, there’s a good part that has also expressed their wish to buy them.
