Cloud9 defeated Evil Geniuses and is now heading to the finals of the 2020 LCS Spring Split.

Evil Geniuses’ master plan failed in the semifinals against a Cloud9 that looks stronger by the minute. Cloud9, the perennial second-place team, is on the road to get its first title since 2014. Evil Geniuses was supposed to be a challenge for Cloud9, but the semifinals turned out to be a one-sided affair. Even when EG got a victory, it happened because of C9’s mistakes.

EG and C9 reached the semifinals in very different ways. C9 was the best team in the regular season, with perfect synergy even after numerous roster changes. EG was the new organization in the league with a roster that looked disjointed. While C9 had a smooth ride through the season, EG had to fight tooth and nail to get a place in playoffs.

After nine weeks of the regular season and one round of playoffs, EG has improved to a point where it is considered the second-best team in the LCS. The match between number one and number two should’ve been closer than it ended up being.

There was no warmup, no chance to assess the opponent. From level one in game one, C9 was loaded and ready to go. EG needed time to get in the game and C9 proved to be an unforgiving enemy. C9 did a good job punishing the mistakes of its opponent, whichmostly came from former member Dennis “Svenskeren” Johnsen.

Svenskeren was not himself during the series. The jungler was in the wrong place at the wrong time on a constant basis. He didn’t create any pressure, and when he tried to invade the enemy side of the map he wound up dead more often than not. Without its jungler, EG collapsed and C9 was happy to march into the enemy base to take the nexus three times.

C9 played its relentless style with a focus on team fights and objectives. C9’s draft was standard, which suggests that they might have a trick up their sleeves for the finals.

EG fell to the lower bracket and will face the winner between Team SoloMid and FlyQuest.
