League of Legends says final farewell to its community boards

League of Legends players have just a few more days to use the game’s official boards before they close on March 9. 

The boards are a platform where League of Legends players and fans could voice their opinions on various elements of the game, similar to a Reddit forum. The boards were also used by Riot to share updates and game changes with players. But after a decade of service, Riot has decided to give users just a week to save important conversations before shutting it down forever. 

“We know some of you use them regularly, so we didn’t arrive at this decision lightly. However, after looking at how many of you were using Boards, it became clear that the popularity of the platform had decreased significantly,” developers stated in an official blog on the matter. 

According to the letter, Rioters and League of Legends players have began to migrate to other platforms, creating communities on Reddit and Discord. 

Riot developers first created the boards as a way to connect players and Rioters outside of the game. It was a place to discuss their “favorite topics.” It also became a place where many gamers formed friendships and found new players to join their teams. Riot developers noted that there were “epic debates, hilarious shitposts, and legendary community memes.” 

What is happening to the League of Legends boards?

On March 9, the League of Legends boards will become read only, meaning nobody can participate any further with any discussions or post new threads. Developers are urging players to save anything they want to keep during this time. 

Come March 16, the boards will go offline for good. All of the threads and files will then be made inaccessible. 

Riot developers invited fans to join their other community spaces, including social media platforms, as well as community forums like Reddit and Discord. While this is where most of the conversation in the community takes place anyway, there’s definitely a sense of sadness that the Rioters couldn’t deny. 

“We want to give a huge shout-out to our volunteer moderators! Over time we saw a volunteer moderation program emerge for those who were passionate enough to support players in their local regions. They put a huge amount of work into hosting community events such as cosplay and fan-art contests. They were ever-present on Boards to talk with players and assist them. To the volunteers who have spent the past decade moderating and helping the community on Boards, we cannot thank you enough!” developers preached at the end of the announcement. 

After a decade, the boards will be no more.
