G2 Esports started week five of the 2020 LEC Spring Split with a dominant victory over Excel Esports.

G2 is back in the win column after losing two games in week four. The team showed a cleaner game against Excel, which led them to a dominant win. Excel didn’t stand a chance against a G2 that looks to be playing seriously once again.

In the picks and bans, G2 went for Karthus in the jungle. This pick was popular in Europe in 2019 but fell out of favor by the end of the year. Karthus has recently become a popular pick in the LCK, which opened the door for a return in the LEC.

On Excel’s side, the team went for innovation with Vayne in the mid lane in the hands of Son “Mickey” Young-min. It was a big risk for the team and Excel would end up paying the price.

Excel’s mid Vayne flops against G2 Esports

The early game was even, with both teams trading equally. As G2 grew comfortable, the team started to push more and soon they found out that Excel couldn’t push back. Mickey was the main target for jungler Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski. Vayne was ineffective and couldn’t avoid ganks, giving away free gold to the enemy.

Mickey wasn’t the only one to blame for Excel’s failure. The entire team adopted a defensive stance, seemingly afraid to take the risks that could swing the momentum. As a result, Excel’s moves on the map were reactionary and passive.

G2 is the type of team that will take over a game if they’re given a chance to do so, and Excel kept offering them opportunities. Around the third dragon spawn, Excel had one opportunity to even out the score and try to get back in the game. G2 read the play and let Excel spend all of their resources before hitting back. At that point, the match was over.

G2 secured a Dragon Soul before the 25-minute mark and it gave them the power boost that they needed to close out the game. G2 is currently tied in the first place with Origen and Misfits Gaming at 7-2 on the split. Excel fell to the seventh place at 4-5.
