English casters are leaving the LPL due to coronavirus concerns
English casting talent for the 2020 LPL Spring Split has temporarily left China due to the coronavirus emergency.
As China continues to struggle with the deadly coronavirus, those that have an option to move to safer zones are rapidly doing so. This includes English casters of the LPL league, who decided to go home while the league is put on pause and wait for the emergency to die out before they head back.
Munchables, Penguin, and more head home from 2020 LPL
Joe “Munchables” Fenny shared a Twitter update to let fans know that he, Oisín “Penguin” Molloy, Robert “Dagda” Price and Jake “Hysterics” Osypenko weren’t willing to risk their health and are heading to their home countries for the time being.
“We don’t really know the extent of how dangerous it is, but it seems it could be a lot worse than people are saying,” Munchables said. “So we’re getting the fuck out of here. We’re going to play safe on this one, so we’re going to be leaving in the next couple of days.”
Munchables also shared that all of the casters are feeling healthy and aren't showing any symptoms, so there’s no need to worry. However, all of them are also going to get screened and checked by doctors once back in their own countries. The casters have also later updated fans that they’re all safe at home or are soon on their way.
This isn’t the first, and likely won't be the last, of the changes in Chinese esports events due to the coronavirus. The 2020 LPL Spring Split has been suspended until a solution is found, the LCK won’t be allowing a live audience into its studio during that period, and preparations for the Overwatch League's Guangzhou Charge have been disrupted as the training camp needs to be relocated.
The virus outbreak has already taken over 100 lives, and no more should be risked. That being said, despite the inconvenience, esports fans have continued to be supportive of tournament organizers closing their doors and talent going home to ensure safety.
