Excel Esports has made some big changes ahead of the LEC Spring Split.

Fnatic’s former CEO, Wouter Sleijffers, is now bringing his expertise to Excel Esports, taking the CEO spot from co-founder Kieran Holmes-Darby. Holmes-Darby will be moving to the chief gaming officer position. Sleijffers led Fnatic from 2015 to 2019, which saw the team rebrand itself as an international lifestyle organization.

Sleijffers called Excel Esports the “most beloved brand in UK esports,” stating that he is “delighted” to take on this new challenge. He is hoping to build the organization into a household name on a global scale, similar to what he did for Fnatic.

“My experience helping create one of the most established brands in the industry meant I recognized Excel’s extraordinary potential immediately, and I’m thrilled to be helping chart its course to become an international success,” he said.

Another sports veteran is also joining Excel Esports’ leadership team. Robin McCammon has been announced as the organization’s new chief commercial officer. Previously, McCammon was the global lead for Adidas, managing the brand’s relationships with FIFA, Chelsea F.C., and Liverpool F.C.

While McCammon’s background is in traditional sports, he said he is excited to become a part of the esports industry, which he called the “fastest growing entertainment sector.” Within the esports industry, McCammon noted that Excel is the “boldest British esports brand.”

“I very much look forward to getting my teeth into establishing Excel as a world leader in the esports space,” he added.

Excel Esports is a relatively new esports organization, founded in 2014 by brothers Joel and Kieran Holmes-Darby. Their League of Legends team was one of the ten founding LEC partners.

They are currently looking to rebound after a tough 2019 season, which saw the team finish the LEC Summer Split in last place. This time around, Excel is looking to make a greater impact with a retooled roster.

“I am extremely excited to be welcoming Wouter and Robin to our leadership team. They both bring with them valuable experience that will help us take Excel to the next level and we anticipate them having an immediate impact on our strategic thinking and operational effectiveness,” Joel Holmes-Darby stated.
