Syed “SumaiL” Hassan is sitting out of professional Dota 2 right now, but he isn’t taking any time off from playing the game.

The former Evil Geniuses mid laner has clawed his way to the top of the North American Dota 2 leaderboards. As of this writing, he sits atop the rankings at both the core and support positions, beating out former teammates such as Artour “Arteezy” Babaev, Quinn “CCnC” Callahan, and Arif “MSS” Anwar.

SumaiL has not issued any sort of statement on the achievement and reaching the milestone was not captured on Twitch or on any other social media platform. Fans can still confirm the news by pulling up SumaiL’s profile in the Dota 2 client or checking out the official Dota 2 leaderboards page.

SumaiL tops core, support Dota 2 leaderboards

  1. Syed “SumaiL” Hassan
  2. Quinn “CCnC” Callahan
  3. Artour “Arteezy” Babaev
  4. Nico “Gunnar” Lopez
  5. Alonso “Kotarō Hayama” León

The Americas ranked scoreboard is a star-studded one that includes most of the top stars from the region. SumaiL stands directly above Chaos Esports Club mid laner CCnC and Evil Geniuses carry Arteezy. Gunnar of Ninjas in Pyjamas and Kotaro Hayama of Thunder Predator round out the top five.

Also near the top of the list are enduring names like Jacky “EternaLEnVy” Mao and Saahil “Universe” Arora. SumaiL has long been near the top of the ranked leaderboards, jockeying for the top spot against other top pros. What’s somewhat surprising is the fact that SumaiL also sits at the top of the ranked leaderboard at the support position as well.

Part of that can be chalked up to the way that MMR is calculated between roles. Though Sumail historically plays core positions, the implementation of role-specific MMRs and recent changes to the MMR system can see skilled carries drag their support score up artificially.

This is seen throughout the support rankings as the top 10 also includes Arteezy, Team Xolotl mid Jose Coronel, and J.Storm’s Braxton “Brax” Paulson. The highest-ranked support player that actually plays the position is semi-pro Brazilian Victor “NekoMitsu” Mitsunaga, followed by Chaos Esports Club captain Avery “SVG” Silverman.

Regardless, reaching the top in both positions is an undeniable achievement for SumaiL at a fairly uncertain time.

Where has SumaiL been?

While SumaiL is sitting comfortably atop the Dota 2 leaderboards, he’s in an uncertain spot when it comes to his professional career. The longtime Evil Geniuses mid was surprisingly benched from the team in September when former Fnatic player Abed “Abed” Azel L. Yusop took his spot in the mid lane.

SumaiL was quick to state that he is committed to remaining active in the pro scene, and he found a new home quickly with the Quincy Crew. When the team fell short of qualifying for then MDL Chengdu Major, he was bumped from the roster and returned to Evil Geniuses’ bench.

He has not competed in a tournament since, leaving his fans wondering when he will return to action.

Why he remains on Evil Geniuses’ bench is uncertain. While SumaiL remains a premier talent and has shown himself capable of playing as either a mid or carry, he hasn’t been linked to any other pro team over recent months. This has led to wild speculation regarding why he’s been out of action, ranging from Evil Geniuses looking to keep him out of opponents’ hands to SumaiL being difficult to work with.

Either way, even though SumaiL isn’t staying active at the pro level he is still clearly staying sharp.
