Khan reportedly to join world champions at FunPlus Phoenix

Former T1 top laner Kim "Khan" Dong-ha is reportedly joining the current world champion FunPlus Phoenix for 2020.

Earlier this month, the community was surprised by the news that Khan had decided to explore free agency and not renew with T1 for another year. The announcement came after T1 completed a successful year with back-to-back domestic titles and two top-four performances on the international stage, though they failed to advance to an international final.

T1 loses another top laner in Khan

T1 has historically struggled to keep its top laners for more than one year and Khan was not the exception. The top laner said that while his time with T1 was positive and rewarding as a player, he was looking to continue growing elsewhere. Now it seems that Khan’s next destination is no other than world champion and LPL powerhouse FunPlus.

Khan would be replacing Korean top laner Kim "GimGoon" Han-saem, whose contract expired on November 19. The rest of the players are still under contract, mid laner Kim "Doinb" Tae-sang through 2020 and the remaining three players locked in through 2021.

FunPlus and GimGoon are yet to make any announcements about his alleged departure from the team. It’s surprising that FunPlus is willing to make a roster move so soon after winning the 2019 World Championship in Paris. Teams often give their rosters the opportunity to defend their title as composed.

As a team, FunPlus is not about individual players. The LPL side showed an outstanding ability to work as a unit with one member absorbing more pressure or making more sacrifices. GimGoon was the type of top laner that required little to no resources and still managed to create advantages of his own.

Khan is an aggressive top laner who can also work on his own. After a year with T1, Khan has evolved to become a top laner that plays for his team. That evolution could be the reason why FunPlus decided to make him an offer.

FunPlus is yet to confirm the report.
