G2 Esports earn spot in LoL Worlds 2019 finals by beating SKT

G2 Esports has the Summoner’s Cup within reach.

The LEC champion took a decisive victory over SK Telecom T1 in the 2019 League of Legends World Championship. In the second match of the semifinals, G2 managed to repeatedly dig their way out of holes to earn their spot in the grand finals in Paris.

The series was a hotly competitive one, with both teams posting some of their best performances of the event. The games were decided by the smallest of margins, with numerous teamfights balanced on a razor’s edge. The team that could capitalize better on enemy mistakes took the victory and, in most cases, that team was G2.

Each of the four games in the series followed the same pattern. There were even early games, even mid games, and one decisive team fight in the late game to decide the outcome.

The drafting was consistently standard throughout the series, a surprising turn considering G2’s tendency to innovate with unexpected picks.

G2 showed they can be a disciplined team. The Europeans kept the tempo slow, playing for objectives and not forcing unnecessary fights. SKT had a similar performance, with the difference coming down to late game teamfight coordination. G2 was the superior team in skirmishes, finding the perfect set ups to catch SKT out of position.

The series was not about individuals having a great performance, but instead about the teams working as units. G2 had better communication, and played through their strongest side consistently. SKT was good, but not good enough to get ahead of G2.

At times, the LCK team looked disconnected when it mattered the most. SKT fell short and are now out of the competition.

G2 is three victories away from completing the golden road. The team won both domestic seasons and the 2019 Mid-Season Invitational. The only trophy missing is the Summoner’s Cup.

They will head to Paris to face FunPlus Phoenix.
