League of Legends is by far most played game at Korean PC Bangs
League of Legends is the most popular game in Korean PC Bangs, according to Gametrics.
Better than one of every two users of PC Bangs in Korea is playing League of Legends. The statistics shared by Korean site Gametrics show that 51.49% of the players are choosing the popular MOBA run by Riot Games. League of Legends has now been number one on the list for 64 weeks and counting.
League of Legends has taken over in Korea
Overwatch recently surpassed PUBG and claimed the second place rank in Korea with 7.49% of players, while the battle royale FPS fell into third with 7.41% of players.
The numbers don’t come as a surprise. League of Legends recently celebrated its tenth anniversary and is one of the most popular online games at the moment. According to a recent press release from Riot Games, the game has 8 million concurrent players daily and over 100 million players monthly.
League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) is arguably the best competitive league in the world for League of Legends. Five out of eight World Championship titles have gone to a team from the LCK. SK Telecom T1 is the team with the most titles in the world with three World Championship victories and two Mid-Season Invitational trophies.
South Korea is also home of the biggest star in League of Legends history, SKT mid laner Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok. Faker has become a role model for players all around the world that wish to get to his level. Despite having veteran players that are still dominating the scene, the LCK has more recently become a place for up-and-coming talent. Griffin, Damwon Gaming, and Sandbox Gaming are fairly new organizations with young players that are reshaping the identity of the Koraen region after what was largely seen as a disappointing 2018 for Korean LoL teams.
The 2019 World Championship also contributes to League of Legends’ popularity. The month-long event gathers the best teams and players in the world to compete for the Summoner’s Cup. This year, teams from the LCK are looking as strong as ever, with all three participants finishing in first place in their respective groups.
