SumaiL returns to Evil Geniuses bench ahead of Dota Summit 11

After a brief stint with Quincy Crew, Syed "SumaiL" Hassan once again finds himself out of action.

The longtime Evil Geniuses mid has landed back on the organization’s bench after failing to qualify for the MDL Chengdu Major. The team successfully qualified for the Dota Summit 11 Minor, but will compete without him. Though SumaiL was competing with Quincy Crew, he remains under contract with Evil Geniuses.

Team manager Jack “KBBQ” Chen announced SumaiL’s departure on Twitter.

“We tried to resolve our fit issues, but ultimately weren't able to do so to the point where everyone felt most comfortable and empowered to keep moving forward,” KBBQ said. “SumaiL will be leaving the roster while we search for an offlaner.”

He went on to stress that the reason for the split was not due to any personal issues between the players and noted that there were unspecified legal issues in play that complicated SumaiL’s standing with the team. It is unknown if this is due to his contractual ties with Evil Geniuses or something else entirely.

What will Quincy Crew at Dota Summit 11 without SumaiL?

SumaiL is one of the best mid laners in the Dota 2 pro scene to the point where he is labeled “King” due to his exceptional mechanical skills and unique understanding of the game. He wasn’t playing mid with Quincy Crew, though.

With the team keeping Quinn "CCnC" Callahan in the mid role, SumaiL played as a carry. This also forced his brother, Yawar “Yawar” Hassan, to the offlane. Neither SumaiL nor Yawar had a history of playing those positions.

Though the team’s overwhelming talent initially seemed like enough to carry them to victory, the team failed to secure a spot in the MDL Chengdu Major as Evil Geniuses, Fighting PandaS, and J.Storm captured the three North American slots. The Quincy Crew managed to earn a spot in the Dota Summit 11 Minor, which will allow them into the major should they win first place.

With SumaiL gone, Yawar is returning to the carry role for the team. Filling the spot in the offlane is Jonáš "SabeRLight-" Volek. The player has spent the majority of his career with the all-Czech Hippomaniacs team, but signed with Team Singularity for the 2019-2020 season.

Dota Summit 11 kicks off on November 7.
