Is Teamfight Tactics just a fad?

According to StreamElements, the autobattler’s Twitch viewership dropped 57% between July and August, when it had under 30 million total hours watched.

Riot Game’s auto chess title became the most-watched game on Twitch in July, with an average of 120,000 viewers each day. The last week of July, Teamfight Tactics saw a 55.2% growth in views. So it’s quite a drastic change just one month later in August, where it’s now the 10th game on the same list.

Much like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Apex Legends, which once had the top spot on Twitch, it appears that Teamfight Tactic’s popularity may have only been because of its newness. The game was released in June, making it just two months old when it asceneded the Twitch ranks. Like the two battle royale titles, it appears that the autobattler may have just been a trend, since it was the newest and most successful title in its genre.

As depicted by StreamElements, Fortnite has gained its number one spot back. The ever-popular game boasts over 89 million views in August. This spot could be taken over by League of Legends any day now, as Fortnite had a slight decline in views from July to August. League is not far behind with 86 million views, a 26% increase from July, and the League of Legends World Championship is soon to begin.

World of Warcraft and Minecraft popular on Twitch

World of Warcraft has also charged up the charts. It’s currently the fourth most-viewed title with almost 68 million views. That’s a staggering 83.7% increase from July. Of course, World of Warcraft Classic made its debut in August. The novelty of this retro game could wear off quickly if the aforementioned titles trending down represent any indication.

The top-ten list features other older titles as well, including Grand Theft Auto V, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, and Minecraft. All four titles saw an increase in views, although CSGO and Dota 2’s surge in views was most likely due to major tournaments happening around that time, like the Berlin Major in early September.

More shocking is Minecraft, which saw a 74% increase. This is most likely due to many big streamers switching to Minecraft after Fortnite debuted Season X. Frustrated with the overpowered B.R.U.T.E., many streamers and pro players alike decided to play Minecraft instead. This includes Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, although his Minecraft views would now be seen on rival streaming platform Mixer.
