Bots will soon take to the big stage to try beating a team of professional Dota 2 players.

OpenAi aims to impress professionals and fans alike in a show match at The International. Dota 2 fans are about to witness huge improvement in OpenAI.

A team of five neutral networks, dubbed OpenAI Five, are playing 180 years worth of Dota 2 games every day. The bots use reinforcement learning at a large scale to train themselves to play the game. The system does not pull from replays featuring human players, meaning the bots are on in their own in their training.

Although OpenAI has lifted some prior restrictions, there are still bits of the game not integrated into the system. OpenAI Five is playing with a lack of scan, no divine rapier or bottles, a small pool of only 18 heroes, no summons or illusions, and invulnerable couriers.

OpenAI Five defeated amateur teams in mirror mode matches and the demonstrated gameplays is remarkable. They will next benchmark their progress in a public match August 5 in San Francisco. The team to beat is composed of former professional players and casters such as William “Blitz” Lee, Austin “Capitalist” Walsh, Iannis “Fogged” Lucas, and Ben “Merlini” Wu. The match will be streamed on OpenAI’s Twitch channel.

The total games having been played by OpenAI Five far exceeds the number of games played by any human Dota 2 players, but that doesn’t make the AI invincible. Players such as Artour “Arteezy” Babaev and Dominik “Black^” Reitmeier successfully outplayed OpenAI during a 1v1 showing.

Dota 2 is one of the most complex competitive and AI learning continues to be on the rise. This represents a huge advancement in artificial intelligence, and even Microsoft founder Bill Gates has taken notice.
