Dota 2 map put up for sale at next Midas Mode tournament
Dota 2 meme lovers are hyped up.
Midas Mode is coming back in September with Betway Midas Mode and MoonduckTV is exciting fans and partly bankrolling the event with “Sir Sadim’s Revenge,” a liquidation sale of the Dota 2 map and all its heroes. This serves as a donation drive for the event, allowing the community to sponsor different in-game elements through the event’s Indiegogo page.
Past Midas Mode events have featured a hand puppet Hand of Midas mascot. The upcoming installment of Midas Mode will feature a background story where Midas’ dastardly brother Sadim is seeking to ruin the tournament by putting all the different parts of the Dota 2 map up for sale.
To support the event, Dota 2 fans can throw down money to sponsor different facets of the game. This ranges from filling out custom in-game billboards to having Midas Mode turn towers into a random object of the donor’s choosing.
As of this writing, the event has raised over $7,000.
The cheapest options available to fans are screen advertisements that are scattered around the map. The next step up allows donors to tweak the icon for different in-game items.
For fans with money to spare, Dota 2 heroes cost $1,250 each. Jake "SirActionSlacks" Kanner revealing the first officially sponsored hero, “The Capri Sun and Gun” Witch Doctor that wields a giant pouch of Capri Sun in one hand and a glock in the other.
Buildings and Ancients are also for sale with towers costing between $7,500 and $15,000 while Ancients are priced at $7,500. The entire Dota 2 map can be bought for a whopping $1 million which would result in all other donors being refunded.
All customizations are subject for review and approval to avoid anything discriminatory or offensive.
With the limitless creativity and wit of the Dota 2 community, this might just be the start of funny memes turning into legitimate in-game components. It also serves as an interesting experiment for monetizing Dota 2 tournaments.
In addition to the unique look, the Midas Mode tournament has unique mechanics compared to a standard Dota 2 game. Participating teams will be given in-game currency called “Moonbucks” at the start of the tournament.
Teams will use Moonbucks to draft or ban heroes, pick sides, and pause the game. Teams can also earn additional Moonbucks by completing “bounties” with one example from the last Midas Mode tournament being to kill an enemy hero three times and type “Get out of my game” in all chat.
Betway Midas Mode will begin on September 24. More information can be found on the event’s website.
