Mongraal and Mitr0 get a $20,000 victory royale at Friday Fortnite
The Friday Night Fortnite series wrapped up in entertaining fashion.
Fortnite pros Kyle "Mongraal" Jackson and Dmitri "Mitr0" Van de Vrie took first place in final tournament of the series, banking $20,000 for their efforts. They sealed the deal by last defeating French duo Corentin "Gotaga" Houssein and Karim "Airwaks" Benghalia.
"Friday Fortnite win with Mongraal. Looks like we were both fucking cracked today, it's crazy," Mitr0 tweeted.
Going into the grand finals, Gotaga and Airwaks were actually favored. The team started with a one set advantage in the best-of-three match after working their way through the winners bracket. That meant they only needed one more to lock up first place, while Mongraal and Mitr0 needed back-to-back victories.
But as soon as the finals began, it quickly became clear who the winners would be. Mongraal and Mitr0 had a 25-4 elimination lead after the first map, with 17 of those coming from Mongraal. While Gotaga and Airwaks looked to make a comeback early in the second map, the French team closed things out soon after with a 25-8 victory.
With the series now tied, Mitr0 and Mongraal just needed one more win to lock up first place. They ended the first map with a 23-16 lead against their opponents. Gotaga and Airwaks did their best to close the gap, but ultimately fell to a score of 40-29.
The Friday Night Fortnite victory was a great one for the pair and bodes well for their chances in the Fortnite World Cup, which kicks off on on July 26. The event features the largest prize pool in esports history, with $30 million up for grabs.
The $20,000 prize will be split between Mongraal and Mitr0, as well as the viewers. Half will go to the winners, while the other half will be used to purchase Nintendo Switch consoles for 30 viewers. The giveaway is being done as a tribute to YouTube personality Desmond "Etika" Amofah.
